Digital Domain Launches D2 Software, Inc

We don’t normally parrot Press releases, but this one follows up on a story we broke back in July that is currently the second most read story on fxguide. Digital Domain has formed D2 to provide high-end digital production software for Windows®, Linux and IRIX Platforms.

PRESS RELEASE:
VENICE BEACH, CA — October 10, 2002 — Digital Domain announces the formation of D2 Software, Inc., a new wholly-owned subsidiary that will develop, market and support digital image processing software based upon the proprietary technology developed by Digital Domain over the last decade. The Company expects to help the digital artist community push the creative envelope through cutting-edge software products and unparalleled customer support.

“Over the past nine years, Digital Domain has developed an exceptional suite of software tools that has enabled us to create cutting edge visual imagery for our feature film and commercials clients,” comments Digital Domain’s Chairman and CEO Scott Ross. “We’ve won two Academy Awards® for the technical merit of our software, and it’s now time to make these tools available to the industry.”

Brad Call, Digital Domain’s Chief Operating Officer, and Michael Taylor, Digital Domain’s VP, Digital Studio, will lead a dedicated staff of development and support personnel who have championed Digital Domain’s in-house development efforts over the past years and will continue their efforts within the new company.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for Digital Domain,” states Call. “The response to our entry into the software market has been incredibly supportive. We are committed to offering a compelling suite of visual imaging tools and technical support that will create the highest value for our customers.”

Flagship Product Ready for Distribution
The flagship of the new company’s software line will be NukeTM, Digital Domain’s Academy Award® winning compositing software that operates on NT, Linux and IRIX platforms. “As a nodal-based compositing solution, Nuke is more advanced than anything currently available on the market,” notes Taylor. “It has been used on every feature film on which Digital Domain has worked from True Lies to Titanic to Triple X, and it is becoming an ever more valuable tool to our commercials production group. The general availability of tools like NukeTM can only serve to make our industry stronger.”
