At 105 minutes, Quantum of Solace is one of the shortest Bond movies ever, but audiences won't be feeling short-changed. Director Marc Forster crams some of the most spectacular and memorable action sequences ever into his first Bond film. And while the action is always physical, vfx designer Kevin Tod Haug had his hands full to bring Quantum of Solace to the screen.

Today RED announced their new plans for Epic and Scarlet. The Adobe support for .r3d files:

Next week Adobe will ship a full native workflow for RED in Premiere Pro CS4, After Effects CS4 and even Encore CS4.

Adobe claims the .r3d implementation has come along way since the IBC demos  ”more performance, more stability, more options, and tuning it to CS4 which is architected for 64 bit systems so that you can stuff it full of memory and get that smooth as butter experience”.

“Import your R3D files, change resolution on the fly, pop into full resolution for some detail work, drop all the way down to 1/16th for fast cuts on a laptop — it’s all there”.

Adobe also said on reduser that they are “working the RED gang on exposing more control on the realtime de-bayering… and of course with Assimilate on making it a full, clean, raw end to end workflow ”

Expect the importer to be posted with RED and linked from Adobe before Thanksgiving. Nov 20th (subject to change).

On December 2nd and 3rd, there will be four fxphdlive master classes in Tokyo covering Flame, Smoke, and even a bit of Lustre. Each session will be covering the same material, but we wanted to have a variety of times to allow artists a chance to actually escape their suites.

fxphd co-founder John Montgomery and flame/smoke artist CE Raum have joined up to teach these classes. Two years ago, they did a multi-city tour in Asia which was very well received by the artists taking the classes.

For more information about dates costs and how to sign up, visit the Japanese training site.

As the polls close, at fxguide we have been reviewing the tech of the coverage. As we write this, it is still early in the nightly coverage, but one of the more unusual technologies is the CCN’s Holographic correspondents. By having guests in remote studios standing in front of greenscreen and in front of 35 HD cameras, the guest is composited into the master shot based a 3D track of the master studio cameras.

While some may argue that this is little more than a very complex visual trick, the use of realtime interpolation between the cameras allowing the correct virtual angle on the presenter is a remarkable transition from very complex custom code for the matrix bullet time to interactive realtime live application. The technology is provided to CNN by virtual-set technology graphics firm Vizrt and Israel-based sports enhancement specialist SportVu.

An interview with RED's Ted Schilowitz about this week's announcements. Also, Michael Scott's impressions of Thursday's RED event in Los Angeles.

We have started filming for next term’s fxphd. The problem I have in writing this blog is which pun to use.. we had a blast, it was the bomb, what a ripper, but you know the truth is - it is kind of stressful. It is stressful as we had just two takes. It is stressful making sure the crew is safe, the camera is not destroyed (it survived under 2 layers of bulletproof polycarbonate Lexan), it is stressful rigging hugely complex rigs, it is a bit stressful re calculating the maths of timing, framerates and explosives, or making sure the towers are high enough and secure enough and then fighting to get the shot before the sun goes down, and we loose the light, but not wanting to rush the guy with the C4, gasoline and gunpowder…. Did it work? Did we get the killer shot that will can now distribute to all the members of fxphd.com as part of a really great complex effects shot sequence? … the new term starts in Jan, find out then.
