Day for night CC

I'm trying to do a day for night CC for a sequence. So far I've only acheved a day for dusk look. I'm just wondering if there are any rules of thumb for a day for night CC, as I always tend to lose too much details in darker areas in my clip. I want to be able to get a night look on my clip without having too much of black areas. Please advise. :?
