As many of you know Combustion 3 is just going into beta, but only on Wintel.

I have got a few emails off list that lead me to believe that Discreet is looking at its plans to see if it will be supporting Combustion 3 on the Mac. Now I REALLY don't want to get into a PC vs MAC thing here... nor do I want to get into a Discreet bashing session when I could be wrong.. .

I would really ask you to voice your support for Discreet continuing with the development of Combustion on Mac. This is the largest group of discreet visual effects customers, so your opinion really counts.

If you reply to this post can you please use the same subject. I would ask you to break the unwritten law of the forum and send a "ME-TOO" posts. Without being melodramatic I think we need a show of hand here to support the product, but it would be nice to do this without the PC vs Mac thing and without bashing Discreet, after all they are only thinking about it according to what I've heard.

Here are my friendly reasons why I think C3 on G5 is a good idea or Top 10 reasons why we'd love to see C3 on G5 !

1. Mac or PC - choice is good.
2. Shake is nothing more than a bit of competition - nothing more - good or bad - choice is good.
3. Combustion has great tools for being used in conjunction with flame and
inferno. As this is flame-news - I would welcome opinions on this but - we
are planning to have a number of combustion stations - on G5s - feeding the bigger more expensive rooms.
4. Combustion team is now back up to speed ( and full of great new people), and the G5 is back at a good performance level for us to use sensibly.
5. A lot of work has been done already to make C2.1 OSX native, its an
investment already made - the new OSX10.3 and G5 will hopefully allow some of that investment reap benefits.
6. The creative community - or at least a significant % ( what 30% - 50%??) of Discreet's inferno and flame users buy or use Mac systems - often with their own money... I know many of my friends have G4 laptops beside their inferno tablets.
7. Shake 3 on G5s will only increase the up take of Mac systems for visual
effects... and UNLIKE infernos/flames - you always run more than one piece of software on a desktop PC. I would expect many users to end up with C3 AND Shake on their systems ( + photoshop, + FCP etc)
8. There are loads of current Mac C2 customers who don't want to move to Wintel
9. Is Shake at its now much higher price, really now a direct competitor for Combustion?
10. We want to spend more money with discreet and it makes it hard if they sell less products not more, and Combustion is now much cheaper ;-)

I know there are some good counter arguments or points about why C3 on Wintel is valid,- on balance, I think the community is better served with C3 on both Wintel AND OSX.

Again could I please ask out of respect for your fellow artists that we avoid a PC vs Mac discussion... Please ! :-)

thanks

Hi All...

I must agree with Mike...

Having Combustion in BOTH Mac and Windows offers the MOST to animation artists worldwide...

I urge Discreet to KEEP Combustion MAC alive.

I agree 100 %

Mac as PC are tools among with the software, as a lot of people use thems, so now with the G5 a new kind of hard is comming like the Opteron PC machines a new 64-bit machines and I thin that for discreet is much easy to translate software codes from the IRIX 64-bit plattform to the MacOSX because both talk in UNIX lenguage, like Linux...
So I think that discreet will continue supporting Combustion, is this part of their bussisnes is good an they earn money, if not...

Tha is my modest opinion.

I just plain don't like working on PCs, so I would much like to see C3 remain alive on the mac!
