Is there a way to use z-depth info for depth sorting in Combustion?

Yes there is, if your rendering out RPF files out of 3dsmax. Make sure you've toggled on the zdepth channel when you do your 3d render. Then bring it into combustion and select that layer. Then under the "layer" tab check the box named "3d depth". Now you should be able to move things freely through zspace and see them interact with your render.
good luck.
