Question: timewarping/adjustting speed of a clip in Inferno?

Hi.

I am working on a 54minute short film that is all one camera move (after being stitched together in various sections). It was shot using motion control and in numerous sections there are obvious speed changes that slow down and speed up (sometimes over 1000's of frames).

The director would like everything to be one continous even motion.... I have stablised the various shots that contain slight wobble's or shakes but now need to maintain a constant speed for the sections that 'all-of-a-sudden' speed up and slow down..... the camera is very close to its subject so the changes in speed are very obvious.

Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

Using the timewarp tool works for a few sections but others are proving more difficult.... is there a way to use curves to change the timing of a clip so that I can set key frames at various points and animate the tangents on a curve to adjust the speeds?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

i am no expert, but if i understand your question correctly, you can click on "time warp" and then select your clip - then click on the "E" next to the time warp button - this will allow you to have keyframe control on time curves - you can experiment with that until you get the whole clip to be smooth.

the problem with time warping is that if you don't use "blend" you will drop or duplicate frames and that will be obvious to any pro - and most likely to any layman. the other problem is that if you do use "blend", you will degrade your image quality considerably.

inferno has a time-remapping tool - i can't remember the node's name - (i'm on a flame - which doesn't have that tool). the time-remapping tool can help by doing a frame-to-frame morph - but it will take a ton of tweeking if you are close to your subject and don't want loss of clarity. i would try experimenting with that tool if you have the time - but it is a tough job you've got ahead!

On time warp you have a graph that you can manipulate, to control the speed. I don't remember exactly where it is, since I haven't done a lot of compositing lately. However I do know that is there and is relatively easy to use so I guess you will be fine

although the TW can be controlled/animated on a keyframe basis, if you are dealing with extreme speedramps that need to be very smooth, you may need a motion estimation solution (actually creating new frames by morphing). The discreet provided (only on inferno!) motion estimator is ok - it was actually licensed a few years back is getting out of date. The newest seems to be Kronos spark from the Foundry and it has recieved good reviews, but is very expensive. ($8-10K). SpeedSix (was 5D) still has a decent slomo plugin and they wont kill you on price by making you buy ALL of their plugins, but still somewhat $$. There are also a host of mac/PC plugins for AE and Commbustion that could do the trick for realitively cheap - you just have to leave the comfort of flame land!

You can also try Twixtor sparks and in the case where motion estimation is not sufficient (I am not sure how hard are your "stiches") you can use RE:Flex sparks, the Morphing module and make that perfect...
