For a multi-system setup, I'm configuring workflow for, I've come across a poser. The client was told by the local Discreet dealer that Discreet has managed to deliver excellent quality because of "444". and that the smoke systems (smoke 6.5, 3 on Oct2 1 on Tezro all with DM3) will have "dual-link SD" in and out. Which means 2xBNC in and 2xBNC out.

My understanding was that (and I could be completely wrong) that 444 was for HD dual link and that SD or rather SMPTE 259M is always 1xBNC single link 422. DigiBeta recorders SD monitors and all SD devices in general are single link as far as I can ascertain.

So what's it really ? Do I need to have to lay so many cables in and out the Oct2 and tezro, or has someone gotten confused here ?

You can work with 444 internal format even use external 422 source. The reasons to use 444: if you use new SONY HD recorder with 444 module, negative film scans comes as files, CG images. Also it useful for complex keying and compositing. Export such projects also can be done to 444-equipped HD recorders or to external files.
Finally: the opportunity to use 444 is only the plus which is unessential for using.
