View Full Version : Smoke on Octane to Windows Network

Hi!

We're currently running some odd piece of software that sees NFS file systems - which I believe our SGI Octane uses - on a Windows box.

Trouble is, our Windows box is an ancient Intergraph 486 box with 32MB of RAM. It's a dinosaur.

I'd like to swap it for a new zippy box that could also be used to run Photoshop for bits and pieces, but I have no idea what extra software would be needed to interface it with the Octane. Digging through the boxes of user manuals has yielded a dusty piece of cardboard with INTERGRAPH DISKACCESS (c)1996 written on it.

Whilst I consider myself an advanced PC user, I'm a Unix virgin and this software's complexity scares the willies out of me.

Is there an easier NFS client out there? What do you use?

Regards,

Philip Timm

The link below is a tutorial on how to mount a pc drive to your Octane. It's not all that hard. If you follow the directions you should have no trouble. Also, if you are afraid of the command line stuff try the System Manager in the toolbox. Once you have the system manager up go to Networking and Connectivity>Mount a Network Drive. If your pc is set up right this should be your last step.

I think you will need a thing call SAMBA, I'm sure you can find an old version.

About Photoshop, well If you manage to find a version 2.0 (released in 1996 If I remeber correctly) then you can run it in your machine.

In that case It would be better to find Photoshop 3 for IRIX. If not I suggest buying a Mac mini and run photoshop from there

The NFS server software for Windows is very slow. I would recommend using Samba to share a folder on the Irix box and connect to that from the PC.

You can find the tardist here:

http://freeware.sgi.com/index-by-alpha.html

and all the documentation is at :

Microsoft Services for UNIX can facilitate this, and is actually very fast. You can create shares on both the PC, and SGI that are accessible from either machine. The setup is somewhat complex though the first time around. I think there are instructions in the Tips section of this site that should halp you set it up. Best of all, it's totally free.
