They're old machines now :) Don't forget extra for video IO and FC boards, VBOB, audio convertors, storage, monitor, tablet and whatever though.

Hi Joey,

I was excited with the possibility of movgin from Flame 9.0 Octane2 V12 to a Linux boxx.

But the price that I got from the local reseller is way too much in my opinion.

Do you have any pricing to exchange systems?

I hope that at NAB 2006 Autodesk / Discreet offer specials for customers that want to change platforms....

Or else we'll have to be creative and built systems comprised of Dual Core workstations plus compositing/vfx + conform and assemble solutions.... to try and have something that's a bit close to the productivity of a Flame or Smoke.... It will be hard though...

having been down that road I can confirm to you that it's very hard indeed and you want to think properly before going down it. If your sessions are client driven it could well be very damaging. In my experience clients are driven mad by the kind of delays that occur when shifting between app's. Also things like desktop motion tracking have clients tearing their hair out.

There seems to be a lot of painting of the desktop scene as some sort of utopia. Sure there are some great companies operating there but there are also some very cynical ones. At least whats been happening with bundles recently is opening some peoples eyes.

We completed a new installation last year, after a long evaluation we opted for Smoke and Adrenaline. We also used some products made by one of the desktop communities star manufacturers in our new infrastucture. While the big boxes have performed almost faultlessly the infrastucture items mentioned have cost us a fortune in downtime, and a lot of hard won credit with clients. Their support has also been abysmal.

At the other extreme there are companies, like Red Giant, who have bent over backwards to solve issues that we had with their software, and that inspite of the fact that we had spent relatively little with them (and had been given the problematic upgrade for free)

I guess all i'm saying is the desktop market is a real mixed bag and your **savings** can quickly dissapear into a pit of downtime, blame and recrimination.

tread carefully

Angus

PS we will continue to combine d/t and FFI, at the coalface you just cant whack the real deal. off-line you can make good money with d/t.

PPS thats just my tuppence worth
