19th September 2010, 18:33
I've been editing in final cut pro for a long time and I really comfortable editing in it (I'll be taking my certification exam in a few weeks).
I know final cut pro is the software to know for the independent world, but vid is still soldiering in holy wood. My question is should I buy and learn how to use media composer 5 to help rond out my reassume or can I expect final cut pro to keep growing to the point ware it dosen't matter if I've even heard of avid?

No single NLE will ever take over the whole world, but if you want to be more valuable on the market, learn both FCP and Avid. Nothing else is really being used in professional post-production houses. And from the upgrades coming out, it looks like neither PPro or VegasPro will be catching up any time soon (although they are nice NLE's, they still lack some professional tools FCP and Avid have).

Master FCP, learn Avid basics. As of NAB 2009 FCP held just over 50% of the professional post production market. Avid had fallen to 36%. They've still not regained their market share by any significant percentage. Heard a rumor their shopping it around to sell off.
In that marketing survey by NAB PPro had like 6% of the pro market, and Vegas didn't even register on the chart enough to be acknowledged.
But yes, learn both FCP and Avid. Just watch the market surveys, it'll be a reliable guide. And wait for this summer. You'll see an FCS update to knock your socks off...
