Smile Techinques for shooting a \"Rampaging Celtic Army\" (Cloning)

    Hi everyone,

    Just joined the forums!

I am currently shooting a short feature which is mainly a barbarian battle based in ancient britain. I have no budget really, and am looking to produce an army of charging barbarians (well 30-40) running down a hill in a random fashion (not in any kind of formation).

This will be based on heathlands with long grass.

I was just looking for some advice on the best ways to clone an army of barbarians, I will have 2-3 people at a time running and was thinking I would shoot on a still plate for simplicity, but ideally would like a panning shot on a tripod.

What techniques can you guys suggest? I know of garbage matting, rotoscoping, tracking but just want some advice on what is best? Giving the best effect, and would be easiest. I am looking to improve my vfx/compositing skills.

    Any help appreciated!

    Cheers

Thats just the kind of look I want to go for, however the budget and resources on this project. I was thinking of using some kind of difference matte? Would this be effective? or would rotoscoping be better? I am playing with Nuke at the moment, but have alot more experience in after effects.

I would try shooting people running in front of a green screen, maybe on a treadmill. Build up a collection of sprites of different guys in different outfits, weapons, etc. Then make a particle system in after effects or maya, etc. and camera map the ground and have the particles flow over it.

A really good particle plugin for ae is particular. You make a comp that has all your sprite clips in it and use the split clip feature in particular to randomize the sprite that it uses as well as the speed, etc. You can also do this in maya.

I would like to learn a technique to do this, do you know of any examples/tutorials of using a particle system to create a crowd?

As well as mapping out the ground plane on some live footage in order for the particles to correctly interact with it?

    Cheers

The FXPHD course, a Guerilla filmmakers guide to after effects, is a whole course dedicated to this type of work. I found it perfect for preparing me for doing exactly this type of vfx.

Essentially, Shoot a bunch of sprites as mentioned above. Clone then, offset them, composite them.
