keying blonde hair detail
hi,
I need to key a running blond girl on a bluebox. The whole body is not a problem but the hairs are giving me a pain. The problem is that she is composited over the while wall, and I allways get those nasty dark shadow/outlines. I dont want to shrink the mask cos I will loose all the details of the hair. I've tried to make 2 keys using Master Keyer. One for the main part of the hair, the other one for the tips - it helped a bit but I still got that unwanted outline. Any tips on some blending.keying combos on how to get the best result with task like that. Ah and some info - the shot was made on 35mm film strip, I got 2 passes, 1 for key without any CC and one final light with some color adjustments. Software is Flame.
Thanks for any info.

Are You tried to use a Tracer or a curves (like in Discreet Keyer) to control the image over background?

This may be obvious, but did you try the Blending parameters in the Master Keyer? With AutoCC on, choose Blending from the Sample popup, then tap anywhere on the image, adjust Luma and Edge Size, maybe the edge colour trackball too... this problem is what they're designed to fix.
If not, you could create an edge matte by subtracting a shrunk version from the original matte, and use that to do some more technical CC work...

I would try shrinking the matte until the dark edges around the hair dissapear completely - then underneath this layer add another new 2nd layer. With this 2nd layer try a luma key to pick up all the blonde hair detail (garbage mask away anything else other than hair) - then swap in a frame of white into the front of this layer - you will need to color correct the white until it looks golder (more blonde) to match the girls hair color - this method works pretty well for blonde hair as it is usually brighter that the blue screen - if the hair is not much brighter that the blue screen just use your key set-up for the 1st layer (this time with NO shrink - but with a garbage mask to isolate the hair only) and use the white frame cc as the front source as per above. Good luck

Thanks guys for your help. It worked pretty well. I used master keyer with aditon of luma key on the smaller strands. It blends good - thanks again.
Thank God for a Master Keyer. It speeds up the process quite a bit.
