And Another One Bites the Dust: Dalsa Sold to Arri
Filed under: fxNewswire by Mike Seymour @ 7:35 pm on October 30, 2008

Dalsa is selling its camera division to Arri. Under the terms of the deal released to the stock exchange, Dalsa will sell its camera division, help develop future sensor chips for Arri, and seek to also sell its rental division separately. Faced with continuing losses in their high end camera sector, compared with modest profits in their other chip and sensor operations, Dalsa is off loading their cameras to Arri.

“The actions we undertook in the third quarter to stem further losses in our Digital Cinema initiative will now allow us to focus our attention more fully on our core Digital Imaging and Semiconductor businesses, and to further build on their success moving forward,” commented Brian Doody, Chief Executive Officer of DALSA Corporation.

Assimilate Responds to Autodesk Lawsuit
Filed under: fxNewswire by John Montgomery @ 11:33 am on October 24, 2008

When we first learned of Autodesk filing a lawsuit against Assimilate in early October, we asked both companies to comment on the litigation. ASSIMILATE CEO Jeff Edson promised the company would provide fxguide with a statement regarding the suit, and now they have. (note: Autodesk declined to comment regarding pending litigation)

It probably comes as no surprise, but “ASSIMILATE denies that SCRATCH infringes any Autodesk copyright and denies that SCRATCH was copied from Cyborg. Autodesk’s complaint is an effort to assert copyright protection over user interface elements that are not subject to copyright protection for a variety of reasons.”

Autodesk Files Lawsuit Against Assimilate
Filed under: fxNewswire by John Montgomery @ 12:43 pm on October 10, 2008

Google alerts and several readers have let us know that Autodesk has filed a lawsuit in Canadian courts alleging that Assilimate is using intellectual property related to 5D’s Cyborg product, now owned by Autodesk (see justia.com). Autodesk purchased the IP related to Cyborg and three other 5D products in 2002 during liquidation proceedings in the UK after 5D went out of business. Much of the specific violation noted in the lawsuit revolves around UI elements, but the filing states that these details suggest “portions of the underlying Cyborg source code and/or the structure, sequence, and organiztion of that code were copied as well.”

We contacted both Autodesk and Assimilate for comments regarding the lawsuit. Autodesk responded that they are seeking to protect their intellectual property and it is not their policy to comment on pending litigation. Assimilate replied as well and will be providing a comment shortly. We’ll post that information here when we receive it.

The 2nd installation of the Visual Amalgam Art Show was an enormous success, with an estimated eight hundred people attending the event at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. The semi-annual event features the personal artwork of film industry and visual effects professionals.

Show organizers and artists, Patrick Finley and Evan Jacobs, were thrilled with the enthusiastic turnout for the show. “It really surpassed our expectations,” Jacobs said. “People starting trickling in during the day, even before all the art was hung on the walls! By the time the show was scheduled to start we had a packed house.”
