hi there,
I am going through the manual right now, with little luck. in ’09 version how do you slip a shot forwards or backwards, keeping the same edit duration in both the timeline and on the desktop? we just jumped from ’07 to ’09 and it seems to all of a sudden be different.
any help would be much appreciated!

does this make sense?

thanks Tim!
here’s another one for you: when in timeline view and you are shortening, or lengthening a dissolve is there anyway to see visually how many frames you are slipping the transition?

i’m not exactly sure i’m understanding you, but here’s a few things:
use the “B” & “N” hotkeys. they are for “back” and “next” edit mark. you can zip along pretty quickly on the Timeline with these. if you B or N to an edit mark and you DONT have either segment selected,( no yellow highlight color on the segsments) over on the lower left screen where your softFX menus usually appear, it will switch to “CUT” “DISSOLVE” “WIPE” “AXIS” buttons. and if you hit the “dissolve” button it will activate a llittle rectangle that spans the 2 shots. if your editing submenu is activated (little blue LED on “editing” button under the exit play button) you will see a field for dialing in a dissolve duration. (it’s the blank blue field directly below “Value Abs” ) entering different amount will interactively scale the size of the dissolve icon (little rectangle bisected by a diagonal).
Now… if you would like to edit the duration of the dissolve a little more accurately you can do this. go in to your hotkey editor (CTRL + ALT + F8) and enter the word “zoom” in the search field. it will locate all instances of zoom hotkeys. for some reason, the rectangle zoom hotkey is not mapped to anything, which sucks because it’s really handy for timeline tweaking. what i do is clear the hotkey entry for “continuous zoom” and save. then exit the hotkey editor. (CTRL + ALT + F8 again) now if you CTRL + SPACE and DRAG a rectangle around the dissolve icon on your timeline, you will zoom way in on it. once zoomed in you can more easily grab one side of the dissolve (provided you have enough head/tail trim to support some trimming) and just drag it. you will see the “T” and “H” amounts change interactively as you drag one side of the dissolve icon, telling you how many frames you’ve trimmed the dissolve. if you want to trim your dissolve WITHOUT changing the edit point, deselect “link transition” and then you can slip / trim the dissolve while leaving the original timing of the segments. finally, if you want really be cool, you can map a hotkey for the “home” button (lower rt hand corner) to get you back out to your full un-zoomed, timeline veiw.
does any of this help???
let me know…
cheers,
tim

July 16, 2008 at 3:35 pm #216991pixelmonkParticipantI’m with you on that one.
Trying to do a simple trim on a shot involves too many buttons now( and double jointed hands!!) and you don’t seem to enter a numeric value for a slip anymore.Paul
July 16, 2008 at 6:07 pm #217007new wayParticipantthat helped quite a bit, thanks Tim!

Paul,
Actually, you can. Make sure the blue editing button is clicked to activate its LED, and to bring up the trim, ripple buttons etc. Activate trim. To do the numeric thing, CTRL ALT + click head or tail number.Marcus
July 21, 2008 at 4:10 pm #216992pixelmonkParticipantCheers, thanks for that Marcus.
Still less elegant than it was though.Paul
