Can we have have one on this site ..a Guide on how and on what systems you can do it on ,… using XLV raids or whatever ? There some post houses r using them .. how ?, and what is the step by step guide to a DIY framestore (raid, array) for discreet systems….do you need a licence ? etc.
It would be nice to have an accurate thorough step by step Guide,.. when ever I get into discussions about this with other users or engineers they dont seem to know what they r talking about …!! the ones who do seem to know keep qiet ….r there any secrets.
Silly Q. :
I found guide on how to create a simple XLV from 2 option disks.. surely it wouldn’t work as a flame framestore??c’mon mike sort it out!!

OnyxRE2, OnyxIR and Indigo2 systems are the ones that come to mind.
More recent systems do support “file framestores” (flame creates one big file and writes to it), but I think the software limits the maximum size of a file framestore to some “small” number (2 GB?)
Either way, you don’t benefit from parity protection (if a disk dies, the whole framestore is lost) and from wire networking if you have multiple machines.
Over the last few versions of Inferno, the XLV machines I’ve played with all had issues with background import (i.e. imcopy) that weren’t there on Stonefs machines…
I think everyone wishes they had a way to work around the outrageous amounts of money discreet charges for stonefs, but it seems that right now discreet has the upper hand… 🙁

Thanks in advance

February 14, 2005 at 5:05 pm #206863paul_roundParticipantWhen I posted that we were using them, we were using vsn 4 on Onyx 1. Now on vsn 5.x on Onyx 2 and back with stones. vsn 5 will not work with 3rd party arrays.

PeerlessSorry for my ignorance, but what is vsn 4/5? I googled and found nothing…
I thought about CXFS… is there a chance of setting up an own CXFS server FFI will recognize? Is the support for file framestores and xfs/xlv completely gone?Cheers
JaysonFebruary 14, 2005 at 6:03 pm #206864paul_roundParticipantvsn 5 of Inferno
