Does anyone know where I can find a reference for 4×3 ‘standard’ (1.33:1) title safe on a 16×9 PAL anamorphic frame(1.78:1), or how to set it up as a guide in flame?
I’ve just had some tvcs rejected in Australia because although the stations require everything in 16×9 anamorphic they want all the titles/graphics in 4×3 safe because they centre cut them. New Zealand is headed that way too so it would be good to find something definitive.

its a weird question cos u dont mention if yu mean 16:9 footage OR a 16:9 letterbox on a PAL frame……if its footage> load a PAL frame, go to the guides, set safe title and action, save the guide as maybe PAL_REF, load in a 16:9 clip , go to guides and load in the PAL_REF guide …. if its a PAL frame with a 16:9 letterbox simply switch on the letterbox and when u active safe action/title choose “relative to guide”

On Smokes Guides… I assume it would be the same for FLame. There is a 4:3 to 16:9 dual grid layout. Go to your grid popup which is set on default, and look at the options.

I just did a 16×9 animorphic NTSC and needed the 4:3 safe areas for the edge crop.

So it should be already there.

Do they really centre-cut 4:3, or do they do a 14:9 cutout then letterbox that into 4:3? That’s what happens for 4:3 transmission of 16:9 material over here. The BBC has all the specs for the UK, but it could be different… useful PSD on this page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/tvbranding/picturesize.shtml

Hey thanks BKM that’s just what I was looking for – figured there had to be something in there but skipped over it in my hurry.
And thanks for the BBC ref., Loops. I’m pretty sure they are centre cutting from a full 16×9 but I could be wrong. I’m not going to take any chances! Doesn’t leave a whole lot of room for anything! I just heard that 20% of tvcs in Australia are rejected for this reason.
We’re transitioning between formats now and the NZ broadcasters are also using 14×9 as a compromise. Only another 12 or 13 years and we won’t have to worry about 4×3! 😉
