Hi there,
This post may be mainly interesting for the german speaking folks – sorry. 🙁
I have written a research (diplomathesis) about keying and Colorspace converisions. 8)
You can find more information on it at http://www.HL-insi.de . The website is in English, although the thesis itself is available in german only.
Here is a little excerpt about what the thesis is all about:
1. Suggestions for an improved workflow in the film post-production, especially keying when it comes to preserving the qualtiy of filmdata. This means especially the nature of different colorspaces such as CIE, RGB and YCbCr as well as colorspace conversions and subsampling.
2. The analysis of the current keying-software solutions and presentation of new keying approaches.
In my research I am taking a close look at keying software offered by Ultimatte, Primatte and Discreet and am analysing new keying approches like Z-Keying or keying in front of a reflective screen.I am looking forward to your feedback. 🙂
cheers,

It is also helpful in modeling. You might have heard discreet* 2.5D thing. It is a displacement function by a luminance map. The Z-video is also ideal for that kind of jobs.

Compression changes everything. I also think you might want to take a look at photoshop and it’s magic wand+colour range. It is in fact 5000% better than any keying system

Yes, the Z-Cam provides a lot of new possibilities for real-time keying and effects. If you are looking for innovative technologies to enhance your broadcast-productions it may be worth to take a very close look at it.
Unfortunately its SD only at the moment and quite expensive and although you are independet from a bluescreen you will have problem to key very furry objects. I dont think there is a chance to key semitransparent things like smoke and fine tissues too.
@eltopo: in my opinion the magic wand in PS is no *real* keyer. If you have shadows or other semi-transparent objects you will have your problems. Also, it spill-suppression is not possible to with this tool. You will have to do quite some colorcorrection in PS to remove it.cheers
