It’s been a long time since I’ve posted here, (I had to re-register) but I am hoping someone might be able to give me a tip, or offer some help. I’m finally doing some effect shots for an independent film called “Cup of my Blood”. Its being produced by a production company in Chicago called X-Ray Productions.

I have a rather simple problem, and I donÂ’t know if any of you might be able to help me with it. The production company sent me a tiff image sequence that was rendered at 23.976 fps because they was to put the footage strait to film.

So 23.976 fps has been my frame rate on everything so I donÂ’t screw up any of the timing. The scene involved a woman shoving a tire iron through the back of a guy and having it pop out through his chest as he turns and fires while walking out of the scene.

I was able to model a CG tire iron in Maya and set the frame rate to 23.976 fps. I brought in the image sequence from Maya into After Effect 6 Pro and made a new comp while setting the movie to:

    Size: HD 1920 x 1080

    Frame Rate: 23.976

    Audio: None

When I was finished with the effect and previewed the effect shot in After Effect I was happy with what it looked like and was ready to render it out.

I had set it to a tiff image sequence and set it at Best, Full, and Length of Comp.

I went and check the tiff option and made sure the size of the images would be set to HD 1920 x 1080. I believe the quality was set to 24 bit tiff images.

So I render out the sequence and it finishes fine. I open up the image sequence into Quicktime 6 and set it to half the size so I can see it on my monitor. I export the movie out to a .mp4 and then open the .mp4 to see how well it plays.

The sequence almost plays double the speed of the duration. Thinking I some how did something wrong I imported it again into Quicktime 6 and exported it as an mp4. Same thing happened again. So this time I import the sequence and set the movie to half the size, and export it as a .mov Â… when I open the .mov and play it, it plays fine.

I had already sent off a copy of a DVD that had the image sequence I had rendered out to the production company and they are experiencing the same result. Its almost double in speed. They though it could be a “field” issue but I have been doing no compression and the clips of the footage I had received I interpolated at the beginning.

IÂ’ve tried increasing & decreasing the frame rate to in After Effects to alter the FPS and doesnÂ’t seem to help. It plays just like before when I do a RAM preview. Everything looks fine which i fine odd, I’d expect it to speed up or slow down but I get neither.

I donÂ’t know if there is something that IÂ’m forgetting, but if any of you can think of something I would greatly appreciate your time. ItÂ’s always a pleasure to talk to this community in the past.

    Thank you for your time,

    Nathan Hammack

Sorry for not being encouraging, but the 1st thought that came in my mind was also thar it is a fields’ problem-I’m not a Maya User,so I can’t figure out anything else right now-You could try asking in the Creative Cow After Effects Forum…AE is their main interest…When you come up with a solution,if you have some time please send a reply,I really want to know what the hell went wrong…

    Got a link? 😯 😉

Thank you for your help, as this is driving me nuts and it’s getting closer and closer to the end date to when they add it to the film.

I’m hoping to come up with a solution here soon! 😕

Man do I feel really silly. In the project window you interpolate your footage… well there is a couple of options, but the one I didn’t go to was “Main”. In this option it assumes that unless your working with a framerate of 30 FPS that everything is running at that framerate.

    Basically is said this:

Assume framerate is at: 30 FRAMES PER SECOND

It didn’t matter if the comp was set to 23.976 fps, but I had to make sure that interpolation that the frame rate was set to 23.976 fps

As soon as I did that, life was grand.

Some days I could just kick my self in the ass. 😳 😕 🙄
