The new Analyzer seems to work fairly well for a cloud tracker but I couldn’t find any information how to attach and object (3D Text) after I had created the point cloud. Anyone have a schematic screen grab they would care to share??

    Thanks

    Hi,

The new point cloud that is created in 2012 does not give axis nodes in the schematic by default. That was the original issue most had with the old tracker is that you have hundreds of unmanageable axis nodes in the schematic.

The new way is to create your 3D text (for example) and in the camera view you would snap your object to the points of the cloud.

To snap to the points of the 3d cloud, make sure you are in move mode. Hold down the SHIFT hotkey and start moving your object towards the points of the cloud. When the axis of your objects is close enough to the cloud points, it will automatically snap to the point in X,Y and Z. This is so much easier and less messy in the schematic.

    Two side notes.

If you double click on the analyzer node, you can set how the objects snap to the point cloud in terms of alignment and orientation.

It is not necessary to link the Analyser node to the Axis node for a simple object placement but I do so that I can keep track of what objects are driven by the point cloud. This connect DOES make an impact when you start doing bject tracking but that something you can look into when you need it.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

in reality how oftn do we use 3d text? id be very gratefull if some could post their workflow for using the 3d track to track in stills etc into a scene. ie getting rid of something on a wall etc. currently using projecters on to surfaces just wondering if there is a better way

Diffuse textures with camera projected UV’s are better than old projectors in my opinion (they behave similarly, but there’s less hoop-jumping to get a camera projection, and mattes work)

As for 3d tracking and cards, what I do is run a 3d track and once I’m happy with the solve I select a group of points on a wall that I need to replace for example and create a point cloud.

Then I make an axis and image the child of said point cloud and see if I like a planar transform or a centroid one for the image placement (likely planar since it’s a wall). This will slap the image card I just added into generally the right space and a little translation/rotation of the axis between the point cloud and image node will dial it right in.

Add a diffuse texture of your clean wall (I’m assuming it’s a cleaned up still from the footage and thus can be camera projected correctly) and change the UV mapping to “camera projection”, select the camera (I usually duplicate the camera, delete all the keyframes except for the clean frame’s frame and rename it something obvious like “Frame34ProjectorCam”) and viola: 3d tracked camera projection.
