    I have been working on some headlight passes in Nuke and curious what workflow works best for this?

    Are the effects that come built in enough for a good effect?
    Should I buy a Foundry plugin to achieve this better?

    Thanks so much!

    In the etc menu click All Plugins/update

    Then go back into All Plugins and you’ll see a massive list of all nodes in nuke including several “hidden” ones.

    Under G you’ll find “glints” which will probably do exactly what you’re looking for.

    I’m not sure what glare is, you need to use “Glint”, it’s creates starburst like effects on the bright parts of an image. Very headlight like.

    Here’s the node:

    set cut_paste_input [stack 0]
    version 5.1500
    push $cut_paste_input
    Glint {
    name Glint1
    selected true
    xpos 70
    ypos 2466
    }

    Glare is also the name of a Sapphire Plug (as is Glint by chance). It really depends on what you need and what kind of look you’re aiming to achieve. I’ve created realistic glares by using a combination of directional blurs and comping/screening those in. You don’t need anything fancy like Chromatic Abberation or such right?

    A good reference is to google headlight glare in images and get some reference. I’ve successfully done that and then tracked and screened that in for some “real” headlight reference. Easy to do since a lot of the good reference pictures are taking in the dark, making it easier to comp those lights over what you need…

    You could even modify a lens flare to get an interesting look.

    To do a Glare in Nuke you basically key your highlights with a luma keyer and then use a Convolve with a Flare as the convolution pattern. That way you can control the chroma spread and chroma shift using the Flare’s controls.

    There was a glare gizmo floating around, try checking http://www.fxshare.com
