Hello,
what do you think of apple’s newest achievment? Does it suffice as a pro gradng tool?June 11, 2007 at 5:22 pm #215672zinniaParticipantIn my oppinion, Color is a quite good tool for not too demanding jobs, or short projects. I won’t use it for large shows or grading sessions with a client behind me.
It’s a good tool but could be really better. There are still some huge technical problems, like the really slow playback when the output monitoring is enabled…
Try it and see if it fits to your needs.
If you plan to use it extensively, the acquisition of a control surface is a must with that kind of tool.July 7, 2007 at 10:52 am #215670SinanParticipant@FLGB 23360 wrote:

I am testing color for the last few weeks, when I have time for it… On my config, I have a Macpro(for demo only), and an ATI-X1900xt. I get realtime 2K playback, with primary in/primary out gradings. However, that is not because of the CPU, it is because of the difference between ATI and Nvidia. Put the ATI, and you will see realtime performance in 2K 10bit log dpx files. Ofcourse, only if you have enough disk bandwidth!
About video monitoring: yes I get 12fps with Kona! That is my biggest problem!… However, that is not a problem specific to color application. That is a general readback performance problem of current gfx cards. You can write very fast to gfx memory, however the inverse is not so fast. That is why discreet(oops AME), is limiting readback for SD resolution on AJA video preview. For realtime preview, they take the DVI output of gfx card, and put it ro Miranda DVI ramp, for SDI monitoring. I want to come to a similar solution with color, I want to preview HD timing from the 2nd output of x1900xt, and connect it to a DLP or, convert it to SDI and connect to Sony BVM, etc…
So far I’ve found DisplayConfigX application only. Which is from a german developer. The website is: http://www.3dexpress.de/
I dowloaded the application for configuring HD 50i preview, but my current display drivers doesn’t allow interlaced modes! I am stuck with drivers! I can do this kind of stuff very easily on windows OS, the nvidia and Ati drivers allow for HD preview. However nvidia’s application is much better with custom timings. And on Windows: there is another 3rd party app. called “Powerstrip”. It is amazing, that it can control almost everything about timings of the video card, and almost any video card. But no MacOSX version 🙁
Anybody has custom timing solution for Mac? Or at least HD timing(interlaced) solution…

I’ve found the answer to my question myself. 🙂 However I’m not near to the Macpro now, on Monday I will try to configure it.
