I heard a rumor that ATI is going To show a FireGL card for the new G5 that is going to be presented at the WWC next month. Has anyone heard this and/or have any confirmation ❓

I read similar rumors in comp.sys.mac.advocacy. Specifically, the post said:

    >>

It looks like the European sites are trumping the American ones in
rumorland. Croquer.fr says that the Jobster will open the cornucopia at
    WWDC and unveil —

PPC 975 chips (G5 extreme?) – max config dual 3 GHz with 1.5 FSB.
    PC4000 DDR RAM
    PCI Express
Dual layer DVD burners (but universal? i.e. -r/w//+r/w?)
the return of 2 optical and 4 hard drive bays (that will make some cheer
but seems to me that tower will get much bigger)
FireGL GPUs as at last a BTO option”

    Let’s hope it’s all true!

Still waiting for Apple to decide to be a real player in the 3D market. Too bad they don’t think professional graphics cards/drivers are important for their success…

    🙁

I don’t think support for the quadro cards is that big of a deal. Especially with the 6800 coming out. The big issue is alllowing their drivers to be tuned for different applications. Right now there are no settings that can be changed with either ati or geforce cards. Genericly tuned drivers will be ok for certain applications but poor for others. This is much more important then having a quadro card since they are very similar to the geforce counterparts.

We had a recent presentation from the Gelato guys and they said the main issue has less to do with the support of quadro cards and more to do with certain gl extentions. Nviidia has many opengl extentions that they have created for windows and linux that Apple/Nvidia has not made on OSX. Nvidia makes base drivers for osx and then turns them over to Apple who makes the final versions that are included in OSX. So it is a double edged sword of getting these extentions.

The fact is that Gelato is a hardware assisted renderer. Not everything is done on the gpu. The cpu is still very important. If you put a quadro FX 4000 in a really slow p4, the rendering speed will be greatly hindered. You do not even have to have a quadro to use Gelato. It runs on generic Geforce cards, they are just not officially supported. So as long as your not worried about support, you could get 90% the speed of Gelato with a $300 fx6800 instead of a $1500 quadro fx4000.

Ati has the X800 16pipe board in testing right now for release Jan10. Should at least double the performance of today’s best boards for the Mac.

Otherwise I’ve heard we’re talking Dual Dual core 970s (as in Quad proc) and PCI express.

Um, no. I was referring to WWDC six months ago, at which only speed bumps were announced.

I’m still enjoying my dual 2GHz G5, by the way.

    😉

seeing as applae have now announced the new dual core G5’s will have the Quadro 4500 as an option the landscape seems to have changed a bit !

My point exactly… it’s interesting as well that this is really only a speed bump on the way to intel based machines as well. No doubt compaines like Silicon Color are rejoicing as well.

I guess the question is, wil we also have support for HDSDI out on the graphics board as well? Perhaps it’s a moot point given that we can move up and down on the bus now between the GFX board and a video board…

    Best,
    Chris

The FX4500 supports 2 dualink DVI and one stereo connector for stereoscopic visualization.

If you want HDMI support you need a blackmagic deckling or an AJA Kona Card

At Blackmagic, there’s only one PCI Express version of the cards right now for mac — Deck Link Extreme PCIe and that has SD support only. Hopefully there will be an HD version in the future.

Regarding the new dual core mac — I’ve got one on order, but hoping the GeForce 7800GT is available before mac is scheduled to ship in a month. Seems like excellent performance for the price when compared with the FX4500.

I agree when you look at the specs between the GT7700 and the FX4500 the difference is very little. I wonder if we are going to see ATI cards in a short timeframe or we will have to wait until the swith to Intel.

This might be worrysome since all points out that the Powermac line will be the last to swith to Intel…
