Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had luck getting a multi layered timeline into Smoke.
This Avid T/L also has lots of Keys and Text.
Anyway I can drag and drop it in Smoke ? or an EDL way which I can link the media to the Firewire drives and get goign my online job.
Any help will be great

It is quite usual work with multilayered timelines in Smoke…I’m not very sure about your doubts…But the way one nornally works to have the AVID timeline into Smoke is through an EDL (maybe a CMX 3600)…If you have more than one layer you should select “Multiple EDLs” in the capture mode to have all the tapes, wich were used in the avid timeline, available to be captured…When you exit the capture mode you should select M-assemble to assemble your EDL just like it was inside your AVID timeline…Also when you choose M-assemble it brings you to the M-assemble Mode, where you have to choose wich videos are Video Tracks or Layers…This is mandatory to your Timeline work properly…
I hope it adresses your questions,

If you want to use Texts done anywhere but Smoke, is good idea to have them rendered into a Tiff sequence or in another extension supported by Smoke…Then you can export it along with an Alpha Channel…And then using Import Image(with RGB+Alpha Button selected) bring it into Smoke
I don´t believe is good idea to use a Key done in AVID once you have a most powerful Keyer into Smoke…You should try to output your AVID sequence to a tape and then from there input the clip to your Smoke, using it as an offline/reference in a Video Track under your Assembled EDL, to compare both…This way you will be able to check if your scenes and texts, in the EDL, have the same timing and behavior as in your Avid sequence…Just use the View Button you have in your Big Player to compare both Video Tracks…Once more, I would urge you to do your Key again using the Smoke Keyer…
Hope to be useful again,
Ricardo

Thanks for ur reply.. I currently do those very steps …I was wondering if there was any utlity or convertor on which I can get a more working conform.
What I mean by that is …easier why to get my Avid T/L into smoke either using OMF or AAF ?
I ahve been trying the AAF … which allows me to get the T/L with cue marks for all fx etc done on the Avid side… but I still need ot re-create all of them which is back to square one…
Fx done on the avid were cc,txt , pan and scan.
Its a long format editorial and all checks etc … are done on the Avid… Smoke is only used for CC , Stabilizing and other enhancements.
HAs any one used Xstoner or FlipFactory Pro… ?
Was wondering if I get to use these softwares to get all the media from the Avid into Smoke and Conform my Edl on File based Media.
Any help will be great.

Let us all know how you get on. Good luck

February 6, 2007 at 7:42 pm #214009burhanParticipantYou could us the old omf method. Use omf to edl conversion tool. It will bring over
some of the resizes and cc but only puts a 50% resize on them, but this acts as a red flag to let you know you will have to fix this later. Chow!February 12, 2007 at 4:13 pm #214016Peter Andrew MontgomeryParticipantI got smoke 2007 and it has the automatic duck conform utility built into it…. 🙂
so life is a lot more fun..
Thanks 4 u r reply

If you have already done these effects and are happy with the avid version you could always just put the avid sequence out to tape or serquence and generate an EDL with the source timecode identical to the record then grab the sequence in (from tape or file – whatever you are using) and use the edl to conform your timeline with cut points in the relevant positions.
November 11, 2009 at 8:47 pm #214018Merrill DataSiteFParticipantI have a project edited on the AVID in 720p 23.976. I want to see if I can get it into our Smoke system to uprez to 1080p. I consolidated a timeline in the AVID and exported an AAF and copied the media onto our server. I can’t seem to get the media to link up to the AAF file.
Has anyone tried this before?
