Hi Guys,
My system is a Flame 8.5 running in Octane 2. We are buying Burn for this machine.
Should we buy the Burn license and the render computers from Discreet or just the Burn and them buy ourselves the computers? What is a good configuration. How many processors?
I work ussually SD but have some projects in HD. I never work in 2k.Thanks
Martin

basically you could buy the computers yourself, if you stick to the specs, which are not too tight, as you dont need e.g a graphics
best price/performance ratio i heared is 4-8 proc

February 8, 2006 at 10:44 am #211909AnonymousGuestHi,
Thanks alot. The artice has info. on pricing.
“Pricing for burn has been set at $5,000US per software license (per render node, not processor), or $16,000US for 4 nodes.”
Does anyone know if this pricing is still valid? Or has there been a drop on the price?

We have a Flame Oct2, a Smoke Oct2 and a Smoke Linux.
Is there an extra cost per Discreet system that would use the Burn nodes?”
Or I only have to purchase 4 rendernodes with Burn licenses and these can be accessed by any of the 03 Discreet systems that we have??

You only pay for the Burn licenses and they can be used by as many Discreet systems as you have. You need a PC to run the render manager to assign the jobs.

One piece of advice is to buy your sparks through discreet when you buy the burn licenses. You can always negotiate some type of “discount” on the software, and the same discount will be applied to the sparks. This can be cheaper than buying the sparks directly from the spark manufacturer.

You also need a Wire license on each system which will be sending Burn jobs (Burn uses Wire to access the framestore of the machine sending the job), so if you don’t already have Wire, that would be an extra cost for each machine which needs to send Burn jobs.
February 15, 2006 at 1:01 am #211907AnonymousGuestHi guys,
Thanks for the useful info.
We already have wire so we’d have to purchase 4 Burn licenses and 4 IBM Dual Proc…
