Sorry if this has been talked of already but last i heart combustion 4 was still coming out for the mac, in the fall now. Anyone get wind of if Autodesk still plans on releasing/developing combustion for the Mac?

I have a big project coming up with a lot of comp work and i need to decide weither to stick with combustion or if its time to move onto something else. IS shake the only other serious option on the mac?

Don’t get stuck around a software to make a job.
No matter wich platform you would like to have or work with, no matter wich software, if u have a good knowledge about compositing then is just a matter of few days to find the tools you need over different applications.
Anyway dunno about any upcoming C4 Mac release but if look further into this forum you can find something, Shake runs great on MAc and is very good for compositing, otherwise you could try AE that has lot of plugins andis more friendly about motion graphics also.

I hear ya, I by no means plan on getting stuck on software but I work more or less completely indepently so i can’t just spend $3000 on a piece of software just to check it out. I have motion and combustion 2, so getting after effects seems a be redundant (and i hate that mass of floating windows interface). So what i need is a serious comp application. Upgrading combustion would be much cheaper and i pretty much like it as a comp tool and the additions i see in V4 seem pretty nice. Shake seems to be a step above but so is its price, $3000 for a program is a big investment for me (lightwave, FCP, combustion combined cost less) as I’m basically new to the ‘semi-high end’ pro market.

The project is a music video for upcoming major lable band (sorry, can’t say who). There’s basically no budget but they’re going to push the video so this is a really big break for me (their last video spent time at #1 on MTVu). THAT said i’ll do what it takes to make this the best it can be but i still have to be very specific in my investments and definitely no big company budget to pull from.

If combustion 4 comes out for mac in a month or so i’ll get it but if not…hmm….i’m not sure. I can afford shake but it’ll leave me with little left.

with 3000$ budget you could get a tuned pc with c4…since version 3 didn’t run well over Mac I don’t think version4 will make you shout to the miracle!
THink about it an best wish for your job!
    Good luck

I think combustion is appearing to the Mac. And about Shake, yes it is the most powerful comp software for the Mac. I’ve seen it work on a G5 and it is quite good. Plus you get a lot of extras such a lower price and free render licenses for other macs.

Plus I guess it will be the first program to support 64-bit on the Mac.

And bout combustion continuity on the Mac. The new pro cards and the rumour of an early switch to Intel can only mean that Combustion should get a lot faster on future versions, specially since a lot of people are switching to the Mac mainly because of mac only Apps (FCP, Motion, etc.)

I have C4 for Win and the manual that came with it says for Win or Mac, so, I think it is just a matter of time (which is the essence of your question). I was using C3 on my Mac and loved it but ended up switching to Win because of speed issues.

    good luck,

    thanks for the input everyone.

I think i’d just get shake if it weren’t such a financial stretch for me. I was pretty happy with C2 (which is my latest version). The speed wasn’t great but neither was my computer (not the case anymore). The thing that makes me scratch my head is the total lack of announcment.
If they were discontinuing (for the mac) i would assume they would say so, don’t companies usually do that? The fact they announced it for the mac half a year ago to be released in may and no announcements since just kind of confuse me.

Right now i’m doing a lot of early 3D work so the comp work is still a month or so off at least. I just hope there is something at least announced if not released by then. I understand and respect a company being a bit hush hush but this is getting slightly inconsiderate.

    Hi Christian,
I have it on pretty good authority that combustion4 for OSX will be out before the end of 2005.

Well that is good news then if you folks are hearing its coming out by years end. I think that’ll be in time for when i need it.

I’ll be sure to report on how it runs and post the video once its done.

    Thanks again

That’s cool C4 will be coming to the Mac. I’ve been hot and cold on Combustion lately. I download the demo and mess with it for a while and then forget about it. I’m seriously going to buy it eventually. It’s on my list. 🙂 Maybe the new Mactel systems and the new graphics cards will help C4 do better than C3.

I tryied C3 on a Dual G5 a year ago and the speed diffrence between PC/Mac version of C was huge. (compered with my dual opteron)
Really hope Discreet…Autodesk fixed the issue when you buy it for OSX.

A rep told me about a month ago it was more than likely coming out by year end, so hopefully in a few weeks we’ll know.

This long delay could mean many things but i think it would be because they were making improvments / optimizing it. IF they were just going to neglect the release and just put it out to earn a quick buck it seems they would have put it out a while ago and not wait. We’ll find out soon enough.
