Hi,
I am working with Stone Storage is R18. Some of the drives have bad sectors. The HDD model no is Seagate ST 318203 FC.Discreet discontinue offering 18gb and offering trade in to R36 but the cost is so high that i must wait for budget approval from my boss.
So I bought several units from ebay and try to replace some of those bad drives. However the new drives are not even detected by Irix Hinv. If drives not detected by Irix Hinv, the stone program will not detect it.
The ebay seller told me that the drives was pulled from PC JBOD array and were working before he sold them to me. To prove his word, i try those drives in my friend PC JBOD array and the ebay seller is right… those drives were working perfectly.
Now, i believe that R18 require HDD that has special code in the firmware.
THIS IS NOT STONES LICENSING ISSUE AS DRIVES ARE NOT EVEN DETECTED BY HINV. IF DRIVES NOT LICENSED, STILL DETECTED BY HINV BUT DURING STONE PROGRAM THE DRIVES LABELED “UL”.
Can anyone tell me on what utility to explore seagate firmware and the parameter in the hdd to make seagate drives compatibel to R18?
Thanks.

Are the jumper switches on the drives set similarly to the drives you pulled?

😛 – try this
login as root
– cd /etc
jot swr-license (most FFI don’t have)
if you have swr-license
set license by ..
– cd /usr/discreet/sw/tools
./swr-set-licenseI try to change harddisk in my D9 to 18gb but it fail.. 😡
July 22, 2004 at 3:54 pm #207847TomParticipanti am not sure whether you can use other than “official” disks in a stone and wire system. they have their own firmware which has to be recognized and it is not that easy to change these settings (if possible)
but:
end of life for R18 support (and all other R series) is October 2005. So Discreet should be able to sell you single drives which match your specifications. Try to talk to support not to a salesperson or a reseller.
good luck
tom(didn´t see how old this post was, hope you managed to solve your problem)

I have to change all (18) disks in Stone Array.
Replace the new controller card on new disks by old controller card.
The label is in the card. You can use the old card without any problem.dobelk wrote:Hi,

November 1, 2005 at 8:51 pm #207852loopsParticipantThat sounds like a recipe for disaster. If the new disks are even slightly different, the old cards might not drive them properly. Might look like they work, but could cause you weird problems down the line… if they’re the exact same revision I suppose this is okay, but… your’re a braver man than me 😯
