hi,
you need maya and txk on the same machine when you wanna import ma files, cause txk will need to pull up maya for some seconds.
you really should try 2009. it is a huge differnce!!!!!!! the 2d/3d interop has made a big leap.

The archieving system is still unpredictable, I guess. We can’t restore some archieves, especially the whole project archives. Comp archives are quite safe.
Coming from 2007 you are going to absolutely love what they did with TXK2009.
Everything is a file on the network so there is no single point of failure anymore. You can’t “lose” a whole project.
Archiving a big project in 2007 was hard (crashed on me too), but in 2009, you could just zip/tar the project folder outside Toxik, or feed that into your normal backups etc.
Possibilities are endless.
When this one occurred, we couldn’t re-open the comp…bye2 comp
Try right clicking on the comp and clearing the cache? Never know. Or was that in TXK2007?
I have to say, objectively, there’s way less crashing like this in 2009. Just finished 5months on a feature with it and it was a trooper.

PS: Can only vouch for linux though.

If you’re going to use Windows, use the 64bit version of both Windows XP and Toxik. Its a world of difference!!! I wouldn’t recommend going with the 32bit version espeically if you’re doing hd or film work.

February 15, 2009 at 4:33 am #217426Sven WellParticipantWe use Toxik at Handmade more an more nowadays. Make sure you update to 2009 SP1. The difference between 2009 and the SP1 are minmal when it comes to features but the caching is super fast now. Also there are a few major differences now between 2007 and 2009 one of which (they may have made this change in 2008 not sure) is you have to tell the program to use your mediacache in user prefrences otherwise it caches into Ram which is good if you have a slow system but bad if you got a fast raid array.
Toxik is really good now it just needs a few more touches that I hope are on the way. Vector Paint being one of them.

I see. The dedicated media cache drives are also very crucial here. Right now we’re testing 2009 trial version w/ no dedicated media cache drives. The 2007 w/ media cache drives has better performance. How big the media cache drives recommended? Usually we always clean the media cache when it exceeds 400Gb, because Toxik 2007 starts to slow down and crashes often.
I really like to have grid warp in Toxik :).

Are you talking about the “Caching” settings under “Creative” tab in “User Preferences” menu, where you have 3 options: Image Import IR; Rendered Result IR and Create Import Proxy ?
Because all I do is turning on the “IR” button on each node I want to cache into the mediacache.
Thanks,

You can also go the bottom of the first page and set the parameter Display posts from previous: “Oldest First” to “Newest First”… It is only a temporary setting for that one thread.
Scott,
Can that be made a cookie setting so it always happens?
