Hello FXGuide Users,
This is my first post, so if I’m messing up, go easy on me..
I hope I’ve posted this in the correct forum, anyways, on to my question…I am looking into going to school for visual effects, i was originally trained at a television studio for 6 years,
there i learned FCP and Avid media composer and from there i went on to work entry level in the industry…
eventually leading up to me working at a Ad Agency called TrailerPark in Hollywood, California…This was back in in 2006, i left trailerpark to go work as a freelance editor, about 2 years ago,
Now, after not really working for some time, I’m looking to change my field, i no longer want to work as an editor,
I would like to enter the Visual Effects Field, I went online to look at some schools, relocating to another state is out of the question,
So I’m looking for schools in the Los Angeles area where i live…I’ve looked at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects and i really like how straight forward the website seems to deliver the information.
I’m looking to hear some recommendations of other schools as well as thumbs up or thumbs down for Gnomon…Of course because Ive worked in the industry a little, i know that a 4 year degree is not necessary and it’s more based on your video reel as i have one of my own.
I also would like some advice on say, obtaining work … like resource job boards to take a look at… Ive always been lucky enough to get my editing positions
by knowing someone who works at a company I’m looking to go too.. as it usually is, but since this is a different department, I’m curious to know where i should start ?Any and or all your help is greatly appreciated as i really need opinions and advice from the right people going forward with this….
Thank You !

I decided to write about all the steps that I’ve taken in my career on my website so others could see the route I took. I’ve tried to list the things I learnt at each step. It’s all UK based but you might find it interesting: http://conradolson.com/category/career
It is written in reverse order so the most recent stuff is at the top. Hope you find it intersting.
