finishing on smoke

    excuse my ignorance but what EXACTLY is expected from a smoke artist if he is applying for a position in a commercials house ?

    reason i ask is because in a posthouse A – all they are required to do is Versioning and Adding captions

    post house B – all the above plus compositing multiple passes of graded shots

    it seems to be a grey area – i have never seen a smoke showreel
    what makes a good smoke showreel ?
    ( flame you expect to see amazing comp shots )

    any info would be greatly appreciated

    I think the separation between the 2 worlds is not so clear and fixed (at least here in my country).
    Most (not all but most) of smoke artists i know (me too) are flame artists at the same time.
    If you are working mostly on smoke you are mainly asked to do finishing jobs, on flame you’re mainly asked to do effects jobs, but for me were true even the opposite situations very very often.
    Tools you have in those systems make the border line between the two battlegrounds very blurred.
    In many cases i think it’s a question of budget: if the posthouse (or the production) is rich enough you are asked to do only “one” thing on one system, if they have less money you are asked to do more things on the system they own.
    Least but not last is the fact that skills needed to work on a discreet system can be “easily” redirected to work on another.
    Oh, it’s true above all, that it’s better to have one “range” of works in which you’re more skilled, it’s pretty impossible to excel in every kind of job!!
    That’s my experience and my opinion, hope this helps.
