Can I still get alot of mileage from flint 5.5 or do I really need an upgrade.
Could I still use this with clients? What does everybody else think about flint
    workstations?especially 5.5

    Hi,

I am a freelancer, and still work on some Flint 5.5 workstations. I am assuming your system is an O2 with a burst video I/O of 1000 or so frames at a time.

I would suggest it if you are doing sessions *without* clients, because after adding 2-3 layers with cc and keys things start to get real slow. But if you are doing 4-5 min. educational films or work on projects that don’t have a tight deadline some potential can be squeezed out of it.

I still use it for a porduction company which has its own system and they know the limitations.

Do not plan to invest in a second hand system in my opinion.

I hope this sheds some light.

We still have our two Flint 5.5.1, on Indigo Max Impact machines.
Both extremely reliable, if a little two slow for client attendance, but ideal for background and prep work.
We would suggest 5.5.1 over 5.5 as its is a lot more stable.

I’ve used 5.5 quite a bit and with clients. Its a bit tricky as they always wonder why it takes so long. Flint’s of that vintage are still great roto boxes and assistant workstations as you can export action setups and basic garbage mattes and all the cc and key setups etc. (Of course combustion can do alot of this too.) The desktop editing alone is very useful for clip editing and managemnet. But if you can afford it and you want clients sitting with you I’d say use the 5.5.1 license to upgrade and also buy combustion.
