I have seen a number of times in TV what i call flying ribbons. Showtime promos as well as many commercials where lines move through space sometimes in 2d others in 3d. Without being application specific I would like to know how they are done. Thanks

Have a look at Trapcodes “3D stroke” and “Particular”, I think that is what you are after. You could probably achieve the same thing with a 3D app as well but those plug-ins will get you going a bit faster.

Yes. That was what I was looking for. DOes anybody know a way to do it without plugins but just the app?

Was hoping to do them in AE 6.5 Pro

You need the plugin. While I know you were asking about AE, there was some interesting discussion on flame-news regarding using particles in flame to generate the stroke.

In the end, I just find it much more efficient to use the plug-in for After Effects. Its really worth the cost….

Peder Nordby is a mad, mad genius. If you need to do any particle work in AE, his Particular plugin is nothing short of amazing. You don’t get all the control you’d get in Maya or Houdini, but they’re pretty flexible, look great, and render really fast!
