How many of you FFI users own your own systems?
Do you take them on site. Or run from home/office.
I have done freelance form home on desktop systems, I didn’t think it was feasible to own your own FFI.
Please elaborate. ThanksFebruary 9, 2006 at 6:51 pm #211931eltopoParticipantI don’t really see the point of having your own FFI systems as a freelancer. Also if you have that much money you can set up an office as well.
I said this because one of the key aspects of a FFI is working with the client breathing on your neck. And your apartment is not the best place to do that.
Also the infrastructure for a FFI is too big to lay besides your bed.Nevertheless I have found FFI systems on ebay that look like they lived is some scrappy apartment.

They usually rent out a room in a smaller production facility, like a place with only stuff like 3d apps, fcp, AE, avid, etc… One where it is mutually beneficial for both parties and they feed each other work. The studio will already have stuff like decks, monitors, etc… which you can “borrow” since often times(HD) those cost more then the FFI system.

It would work like any other piece of equipment – finanace it over time, just make sure you’re earning well more than the monthly finance cost.
For instance, a 5 year loan of $100,000 would cost you about $2125 per month (assuming no money down and 10% interest).
If you could bill out 40 hours PER MONTH (so 10 hours per week) at $150.00 per hour, this is $6000 per month. Take taxes away from that you end up with somewhere around $4000, less the loan this means you make $1875 per month… not much, but it works. I have no idea what a FFI artists get per hour, but I’m sure it can be profitable.

February 21, 2006 at 9:18 am #211929jonhollis_vbParticipanthi – i have my own system and freelance – but it is a nightmare – the hidden costs are astronical. Things like aircon – discreet maintenance- upgrades – plugin upgrades – digi machines – routers etc etc. but if you can put up with that then the financial reward is good.
jh, ps you do need an office to put it in though – i dont think a client would put up with someones front room or bedroom.March 10, 2006 at 3:28 pm #211935terry silbermanParticipantMy company gave me their old Flint/Effect system.
