    I’m looking for ideas/excuses for using expressions. Does anybody have any favorite or frequent uses of expressions? I’m not really looking for how-to’s, I’m just trying to compile a list of things to try. Thanks.

    Expressions are very useful in automating tasks rather than keyframing, like getting many elements to react to a single element being animated. This makes it easier to revise something since you only have to alter one element. Just recently I created a book that animated opening. The shadow of the cover traveled across the underlying page in time with the cover’s speed as well as the density became more transparent and blurred the further the cover of the book opened. Now say the client wants to change the speed of the book opening and wants the cover to close after opening. You would have to change and set keyframes for the books cover the shadow position the shadow transparency and the shadows blur but with expressions it’s a little more work up front for faster interaction and revisability later. With our example, I can just animate the cover of the book and never againg worry about the shadow doing what it’s supposed to do.

    Other examples would be camera shake. controling the slip value of a clip based off of another parameter. moving something and have other things move whith, opposite, by a certain amount, by a certain time, ect…

    expression = if this = then this(+,-,/,*)this.
