We all know the rapid rate at which desktops have evolved over the last 3 years let alone the last year so i was basically hoping to get some peoples view in on whether or not you think theres much of a future left in hero compositing machines like flames and inferno’s ?
it appears that discreet arent shifting as many of these systems as they were a year or so ago. Having had a closer look at DS nitris on the other hand and its “batch like” effect tree module this has made me question whether or not discreet will be forced into doing something similiar to the smoke systems ?
Having played around on a smoke the main area of discomfort for me is the fact that i cant pipe through a Sparks into the DVE or utilize a batch module.
Im wondering how long discreet can hold out attempting to keep each system’s exclusivity without too much overlap ?
I guess DS Nitris is the reference point as it seems to have done just this to a certain degree
Q: is there a forseable future for Flame ?
Q: will smoke/fire soon inheret Batch modules from these systems inorder to fend off competition from rich toolsets offered by DS Nitris ?January 14, 2005 at 10:47 pm #209216AnonymousInactiveHi there … I’m a ex. flame artist which changed to DS (we actually traded the flame in with a nitris) – I love flame and think is the best tool around if you compare each tool with nitris – the flame will win – much better quality and more elegant tools AND MUCH MORE STABLE
… but for workflow and the time you use to complete a overall finishing job (not Fx) the DS is much faster. Having all tools on a smart timeline is very powerfull, and batch like effect trees for advanced stuff is really great. I would say that a batch in smoke would not be enough to compete with DS (actually the timeline in ver. 9 of flame is a way in that direction)
The smart thing about ds is also that you can time and copy each effect around the timeline – and trim every thing very easily … and more advanced timeline in flame or smoke could be VERY powerfull and could move flame from a effect system to a powerfull finishing system…
I would love to go back to flame … if they Discreet could rethink there very LINIEAR workflow and old way of thinking!!!

With that being said, as much as ds has more tools…. it tendss to nause up the speed of workflow in my opinion.
Discreet does however hide all of there tools also.. but it looks cleaner … somewhat.
but, hell they are too high priced… id rather suffer with a couple of lowend packages together thesedays. hmm.

I’m working on smoke 6.5 HD (TZERO), it’s very powerfull in 3d compositing….compare it to DS (!!!!) no 3D camera yet, no lights… !!!!
we’ll wait for the next version of DS….to add XSI…. -
