I am currently a student at the Art Institute going to school for a BS in motion graphics and visual effects. I was wondering if anyone knew any school that offered some kind of graduate program relating to that field. Or perhaps if experience counts more with employers. thanks!

My initial flip response was to type ILM, DD, Weta, Sony, etc. Then I waited to see if anyone else replied. Since no one has…

I do not know of any programs but I have to say that the industry is fast moving and always changing and what changes it is real life production needs. My advice would be no matter what you pursue school wise, the best experience will be real life experience. Plus the added advantage of gaining contacts that may last you a lifetime.

    Just my .02 cents

If you want a job, get experience 🙂 But if you want to learn and explore, SCAD do MAs in Visual Effects, and in Broadcast Design: http://www.scad.edu/academic/majors/vsfx/ma_mfa.cfm#ma

Well Im doing my Masters Degree at the Academy of Art University, SF

Most of my teachers are former ILM pros, that got tired of working all day. The program head is Tom Bertino, he has been with iLM for over 20 years. Most of them as rotoscoping chief…

I am very happy with the school and its staff, plus they have tons of contacts including ILM, Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks, etc. They all come to recruit for internships as well as jobs…

I went to NYU… if you want to be in the NY market look at that or SVA. Keep in mind that the school you go to will directly effect the people you meet. For insatance, if you want to be a shake compositor in LA, scad may not be the place, or if you want to be a broadcast designer in NY, The art academy SF may not be the place, etc.

I know alot of people don’t like the Idea of master’s degree’s, and to some respect I agree. You will learn in 2 years of school what you will learn in about 6 months on the job. However schools provide a hotbed of oppertunity for Networking. This is key. I know that all of my jobs this year have in one way or another come from NYU.

Keep in mind you are not paying for the education, you are paying for the networking.

    Just my 2cents

Can anyone suggest me a good Visual Effects School in USA. I am an international student and want to pursue visual effects. I’ve looked out for a couple of them, like Savannah college of art and design(SCAD) and School of visual arts(SVA). both offer BFA in Animation & Visual Effects. Which one would be better?

    Thanks.

I agree with Petesid, I also graduated at college and have a bachelor of design studies. Most of the things I have learned is from doing projects outside of class or personal projects.

I’m also interested in that area: Motion Graphics. Any schools you can suggest in Canada or Australia?

Will have a look. Thanks 😎

    Hi,

Yeah, as an Aussie…;P I did my Bachelor Double Degree of BA Multimedia (Animation and Special Effects) and BA Television Production at Charles Sturt University in Wagga, NSW. Over four years.

The single degree’s go for 3 years and the selected doubles for 4 years, they take a 70/30 mix of practical over theory for both television and multimedia. All subjects are set on tight deadlines and a high emphasis was set on group work, quality and efficiency.

I have recently finished the course as of last year and work in Sydney in the Post Production industry and I think the combination of both degrees has set me up to work efficiently in either a television studio environment or a post production visual effects environment. The combination of both degrees gave me alot of options to head into compositing, colour correcting, editing and intergrating graphics into live television as well as working on several 2D/3D shorts.

To answer your enquires about Motion Design courses, I knew of several people who did the double degree of BA Graphic Design/BA Multimedia that have gone on the working as Motion Design artists…

I definitely recommend my degree for someone who is interested in learning about Television/ Visual Effects and having an awesome time on the way! 😀

    Here is the plugs….

    BA Television Production

    BA Multimedia (Animation and VFX)

This is a really old thread, but still relevant to me. I’m looking at NYU, and I’m curious what branch of grad school you went to there for motion graphics, etc…

Even though this is an old thread I would like to add Parson’s [URL=”http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/motion-graphics-program/”%5Dmotion graphics degree[/URL] to this list of schools
