Hi all,
I’ve been using AE and Combustion for the last couple of years and have a good grasp of both layouts and capabilities.
I’m looking to learn one of the more High-end packages such as shake, flame etc. Enabling me to further my knowledge and career. I mostly use 3Ds Max for my 3D work, although I do have a small knowledge of Maya.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, John

My thoughts when it comes to both 3d and compositing is that the application you are using is largely irrelevant. These are fields of ‘art’ and to prove you can create compositions or animate well is significantly more important than what application you used to make it happen.
Though applications like Shake are awesome swiss army knives for film work, there nothing you can do in Shake that you can’t do in AE or Combustion – even though it might take both applications and 5 times as long to accomplish the same task. Having AE and Combustion at your disposal is great. Either application on it’s own has some great strengths (and serious weaknesses) but both applications together should be able to accomplish 100% of what you need to do.
The best way to further yourself is to generate your own work – create a project that you would consider ‘high end’ and work it through from start to finish. Whether that is a specific shot that uses live action and CG, or if it’s a short/long form piece.

Plan out everything and do the work in 2 programs and see what the best results…. Try your best and time everything that you do and see the final results.
