Hello: I may need some advice on a VFX shot….
I am working on a shot where a guy is standing by a bar-b-que, lites it and the flames shoot-up and catch his clothing. (Something like little patches of flames on his pants and shirt.) he then rolls on the ground and the flames then become smoke abmers. That’s pretty much it.
I need to composite the shot in DS or Combustion but was wondering if anyone has advice on how to apporach the effect. I’d like to do it in straight 2D – 21/2D particles but someone suggested making 3D models of the legs, arms, body andanimate and track the particlefX— flames, etc. on these models. Any ideas or advice? Thank you very much!!!

Watching these guys’ shots breakdown reel may inspire you very much:http://www.giantkillerrobots.com
Good luck 🙂

The shoot was actually very simple. First Cornell was shot walking around doing what ever he needed to be doing. After developing and TK, the shots that needed fire were pulled and exhaustively checked. Then it was a black screen studio shoot, with a guy in a black pyro suit that was shot in 50 (or was it 100?) completely inflamed, and trying to move in the same way as Chris moved on the shoot the previous day using the same lenses and camera positions. The pyro shoot was one stop under to make sure that the screen and guy were as black as possible, if memory serves.
Almost all the shots were locked off but if you had say a motion control head you could do some pretty cool stuff.
The rushes were so funny to watch… this pyro guy desperately trying to walk calmly for say 10 seconds, then running off camera chased by 10 guys with fire extinguishers.
After that it was just to use extended bicubics in flame, screen the flames on after a little key tweaking, and warp and track them to Chris.
It’s a real brute force approach but it worked fantastic. I imagine in your situation in addition you would want to put a slightly smoldering shirt on the guy, and shoot a few extra smoke elements to make everything more realistic.

But I believe the shots in the link (giant killer…) in majority part is make with a 3d approach
