Can someone tell me the right procedure to shut down the onyx after exiting inferno. I mean complete shutdown including power. generally i have been going into super user and using the command init 0. but using this command i find the monitor still on with a blue screen. Is this the right time to switch the power off?

    what I do:

    shutdown or halt

then on the onyx2 lcd screen “power down”

you will see on the upper and lower little displays “pwr dn”

then turn off all 3 boxes on the backside (upper and lower first then middle)
    turn off framestore
    turn off master switch

after power down the blue lcd will remain turned on as it is the mmc (or so) which is a little terminal computer powered by the master switch. It has nothing to do with onyx itself exepct of beeing an interface for reset – power down and things like that.

This has worked well for me, but I am not a SGI specialist, so probably there a different ways of doing this task.

    Hope this helps

PS its an ONYX2 rack, not a deskside

There is no “power down” on the lcd screen, there is the key with three positions(12 o’clock/9 o’clock/6 o’clock)….standby, on, diagnostic. when the machine is on the key is at the standby position when it is off the key is at the diagonstic position. Please advice…

our onyx2 rack has a LCD screen (not the tiny ones) and next to it there is a “menu/cancel” button, a cross (updownleftright) and an execute button.

in the LCD you should see the following menus “Focus”, “action”, “view” and “config”.

using the cross – select “action” – press “execute” or “down” and then choose “power down”

if you don´t have this functionality I can´t really help you. unfortunatly. I never needed to use the keys for an onyx2. an onyx IR has keys and you need them to restart them (key to the right and choose restart in the little menu) or to turn them off key to the left, after doing a shutdown or halt

    hope this helps

The key should be set to ON, and you should use the four-way buttons to navigate the menu exactly as previously posted. If you have an Onyx 2 you have the terminal display.
