SGI released it’s new visualization system called Prizm featuring Intanium Processor and ATI GPU’s. So the question will be Are we looking at the next FFI machine or would Discreet leave SGI?

    Interesting question…

I think Inferno/Fire might be the only products that could benefit from SGI’s Linux (Altix) systems, since AFAIK they are the only discreet systems that use more than four CPUs on the host box. Apart from SGI’s Altix systems, I’m not aware of any non-clustered Linux systems with more than 4 CPUs.

I guess it comes down to efficiency–would it be more efficient for an Inferno to run on an 8-16 CPU Altix (single system image) system, or on a generic 2-CPU Linux host box networked to a burn farm of other generic Linux boxes? Obviously the latter would be less expensive, but would there be enough (if any) of a performance advantage with the single system image Altix system to justify the price difference? I guess it will depend on how discreet writes/optimizes its code for Altix, if they do at all.

Interesting times ahead in the near future…
