Our company is looking at buying a a used Flame 8.5 on Octane2 (2×600) from a reputable dealer. It has a permanent license, a Stone array, and is HD capable.
Are parts for these systems easy to get? How reliable would a system like this be (apart from the drives, which I know are generally going to fail from time to time.)
Thx, Rob

Ebay and others just do a google search for SGI.
Many companies still carry all the parts for sgi boxes.

As I understand it, V10 can’t handle HD only the V12 board. (Could be wrong here though !)cheers

We’re getting a quote from Autodesk to upgrade to Ver 9 so we know.
I’d be curious to know if there’s a massive difference with a dual-600 Octane2 and the newer Tezro for anyone who may have operated both.
It’s a difficult decision because it’s a lot of money for an eol product, albeit a very powerful one.December 15, 2005 at 3:44 pm #211315TurboWidgetParticipantCant speak from experience ‘cos we sell these things, not operate them 😀
Again, I could be way off base here but the Tezro & Oct2 both use the V12 graphics, so anything that relies on the graphics engine should be close in performance. But the 4 x 1Ghz proc in the Tezro will kick a$$ over a 2 x 600Mhz Oct2 in software processing.
If the budget can stretch to a Tezro, check out the Linux flame. Same price (on this side of the pond). I hear the Linux is blisteringly fast at software processing, important if you’re using a lot of sparks*cheers
