Hi everyone, I’ve been listening to the various FX podcasts for a while, but I’ve started looking into stereoscopic 3D recently and I wanted to ask a question about keying with stereoscopic footage. I did a search for topics dealing with this question and I wasn’t able to find anything, so my apologies if I’m asking an old question here.

Essentially what I’ve been wondering is whether or not it’s possible to create a key from stereoscopic footage using only the depth variable, rather than requiring greenscreen or roto-ing, if that makes sense.

The biggest thing that I’m imagining would present an issue would be actually extracting depth information from two stereoscopic images. I’m not sure if anyone’s created software to do this yet, or if it even can be done. What I mean when I say a depth channel would be a greyscale channel similar to the RGBA channels but which represents the depth in the image.

I know that things like this have been done with Microsoft’s Kinect, but as far as I understand, it acquires its depth channel using an infrared projector and a separate monochromatic sensor, and I’m essentially wondering if this could be done with only two cameras. The video on the left in this Kinect hack is basically what I’m referring to as a depth channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TGF30-5KuQ&feature=channel_video_title

Is anyone familiar with this idea? Is this even already being done? I imagine that it could make keying much simpler, especially when shooting on location…

nevermind, it looks like PFTrack is already able to do this…
