What is the better machine reeeaaaallllyyy !

Apple claims that 1ghz apple is as fast as something like a 2ghz PC, …..but from reports PC’s are alot faster.

Quicktime is a revolutionary sw… works better on a mac.

With OSX you can creat a lowcost Raid 0, just by adding ATA drives and striping them using OSX (only with 133mhz and above bus speed (new duals)) on PC you have spend a fortune to get a raid.

    OSX is so IRIX compatable

They say combustion is 10* faster on a PC than a Mac? (2ghz pc vs 1ghz DP mac)

THen what about Shake, hows that gonna improve its speed by going on a mac ?

Is a mac capable of being faster (rendering) then a PC?

OK Mac cost more than PC’s.

    and there’s more….

    What is better REALLY ?

Everyone I speak to say PC’s are faster….
Then why use a mac, when speed is most important in this business?

    I am so confused ?

This debate will rage on – and I would like to suggest limiting it on fxguide to just a debate on compositing packages – if we could – since these debates often dissolve into rather pointless – nd often lengthy arguements.

reasons for a PC for compositing:
    1. Prue speed on C2
    2. Compatibility with other software you want to use – such as Nuke
    3. Desire to run Linux or some other OS that you personally like – for whatever reason.

resons for a Mac for composting:
    1. Shake will no longer be supported on non-macs.
    2. Your C2 or AE use is not speed bound.. ie your not doing 2K 12 bit film work, and it is fast enough for what you want
    3. Life is too short to use ugly things / i.e. you want the Mac world with all its sex appeal and easy of use, and that is more important to you.

In the end I find the most compelling argument is what Application do you want to run and which system are you most productive on ? The speed Mhz trip has a short shelf life, fast today is slow as a dog in 6 months, and I for one don’t update every 6 months.

To move off your question ever so slightly, I know people who have bought the top of the line machines in both categories, doesn’t make them great artists. I also know people running on v4.0 of some software when the rest of the world is moving to v 8.0, but the tools they have are enough for them – and they do outstanding work – really world class feature film work on software that is meant to be completely out of date, yet I would kill to be on a creative team with them.
If your a wizz on a Mac – buy a mac, if your a freak on a PC – buy a PC.

    Hi Mike

The point I’m trying to make is ,.. for example I’ve just bought combustion for mac, and I’m being told exchange it for the PC vers cos it alot faster, and I’ve always been a mac user.. if I had a portable top of the range fully loaded mac power book, would it be enough to offer it as package with my self as a freelancer working on film res 2k, for a film post house, and taking home some work…. I’m thinking if that post house has aroom full of shakes and combustions on PC’s … rendering away at 10 times the speed of my 1Ghz G4 Powerbook, how would it look to my employer, maybe I should buy a PC instead if it really is true, which have just confirmed.. but you are also right about people updateing systems, and its about being a great artist, so I am a great artist, I’m going to go for the mac, …cos deep down thats what i want…

    Thanks Mike!!!

Just my two cents here –

Personally I wouldn’t want to be doing 2k res on any laptop – you need a much better calibrated monitor and lots of RAM for a start and regardless of how specc’ed up your laptop is you would probably be better off with a G4 dual processor or PC equivalent and lots and lots of secondary hard disk space – though not necessarily an array though that would be nice!

I love MACS and I have used them very creatively and productively for years but PC’s do run software seemingly a lot faster when using certain cross platform apps!

    good luck

    TNG
