Hi,
I am considering switching from after effects to Nuke for 3D compositing. But i have trouble finding info about how to reproduce my workflow.
First thing is I would like to know if i can manage all my hundreds of passes in Nuke the way i do it with after effects and this amazing plugin called Immigration: http://aescripts.com/immigration/
First I don’t use layered EXR cause I want to be able rerender indivual passes without having to rerender the whole thing and also easily open an individual frame in photoshop and paint it if i need to and I think it’s easier like that.
So I end up with many render passes in different folders. For example if a 3D render version 1 has 3 layers: FG, MG and BG, each one would have like 12 render passes. So my folders would be: folderv001 then 3 folders for each layer and 12 subfolders each for the render passes. If I want to import all this with immigration I just select the folderv001 and all the sequences for each layers and render passes are loaded in after effects automatically. Then if I render a v002 I will call the folder folderv002 and all my sequeces would have v002 appened and with immigration I just select folderv002 and it matches all the sequences and replace them automatically. If I need to rerender and replace only some render passes, it’s very easy to replace and know wich version is used for each passes. With immigration you just select the files you want to be replaced in AE and the new versions in immigration interface and the plugin matches and replace everything automatically.
Now how can we do that in Nuke on windows?
It seems that just dragging the top folder will import only the sequence in the folder the subfolder will gives error cause Nuke can’t see the files in the subfolders…

This also works on write nodes but Nuke doesn’t create the new folders if they don’t already exist so your renders might fail unless you install some python that creates folders automatically on render.
You could also open your Nuke script in a text editor and do a find-and-replace on the file paths. This is useful if you switch machines or move your work to another drive and the top of your file path changes.
