    Hi all!
What’s a good workflow for working with matte paintings/ partly digital&photographed images?
I wanna use the following cleaned panorama for an shot where the virtual camera has to move a little and rotate from left to right…
the question now is, what the best way to set this up is. The solution should be as flexibly as possible… the original image has 27.000 pixel horizontally and the final output resolution should be HD1080.
I’ve access to inferno, but I’m not really sure about how to set it up. I created a test setup with maya where the cameraman was able to control the camera (this was captured, and is avaible in inferno too). I allready created a depth pass for some depth based effects. Further animated details should be added too…

I forgot to add that the inferno machine has a really limited memory, perhaps some tips about hot to save memory would be cool too 🙂

i did a shot last year that used a fairly large bg image and i don t think
it was nearly as big as what you have in mind.

look at mikes tutorial on projecting inside a sphere:

    hope this helps

Thanks for the tip, something similar was the setup I was thinking about. I use a modified plane with an displacement(a painted depth pass). This should add realismn. The main problem with this method is the memory… I hoped there exist some more advanced setups.

why do you need a 27K background ?
i did matte paintings with 180 degree pans and they were rendered in 2K for
Filmout and the backgrounds i started from were 2 overlapping 4K paintings.
that gave me more then enough resolution to execute my pan.
also inferno and flame are not really setup to work in 27K resoultion with
multiple layers. i guess you should resize your photoshop painting to a much
more manageable size ? what version of inferno are you running ?

At the end it will be a little bit lower than 27k. I though about using multiple Projections with 4k each… 3 projection should be enough reoslution.
I’m running here inferno 5 on an onyx2ir system. The main disadvange about this system is that it only has 1GB of RAM… the discreet guy said it should be 512 Mb per CPU, better 1GB… I have to break more complex composites into smaller parts…

as wolf said, try to reduce the size of your background. inferno can handle all kinds of resolutions but it makes it VEEERRRYYY slow.
Memory. Max Memory needed for Inferno is 2,5 GB. 2GB for Inferno (it can´t adress more than 2GB) and 512 should be enough for Irix. 1GB is definitly not enough. Try to upgrade at once.

    Hi!
I also thought about 2GB, but there would enough space for more. But nice to hear that inferno can’t use more…
by the way… I read your Mercedes article in digital production… great work!
