I hope someone will post a breif from the discreet user group metting. regarding the FXguide live training, I’ve heard that DVDs will come out at some point – which is great – because for me it’s hard to remember everything.
I had a demo of smoke 7 … and one of the greatest new features comming up in 7, is history. I also saw the abbility to make track effects (a singe soft effect for a entire video track). Also great intergration with lustre – and defiently alot more coming up.

THINGS TO COME:
SMOKE
– Motion (slomo) in Timewarp
– clip history
– History displayed in a batch tree
– Finalcut meta data import
– Burn render
– new ways of working instead of containers
– Integrated text module in timeline
– Keycode in edl manager
– fonts can be directly imported
FLAME
– Motion estimated motionblur
– Paint in batch
– Rendering with “point of interest”
– new blur, faster, rackdefoucus, directional blur.
– improved resize
– Floatingpoint image processing
– easier ways of saving versions in batch
LUSTRE
– Automatic tracking of masks. Also a 3d tracker that was great. Opens up new ways of grading,
AVAILABLE SOON:
FLINT/SMOKE
– Vers 9.2 HD&SD I/O (apparently there is no way of upgrading your current SD linux system. If you want HD you will have to buy a new box)
Running 8-bit HD I/O on the IBM 6224 Linux platform, the Flint 9.2 and Smoke 6.7 systems feature:
-Apple Final Cut Pro XML format support: Editorial decisions made in Final Cut Pro are transferable to
Discreet systems, thereby simplifying the post-production process (Announced separately)-Autodesk WiretapTM 1.5 support: Increases third party application access to media from
Inferno, Flame, Flint, Fire and Smoke systems’ media via Autodesk® Stone®LUSTRE
– Wiretap, grade a clip over the network, no need to copy it to yout local stone,
– CPU boost, ie 4 secondarys in 2K realtime
– A mac version. Very cool.
April 23, 2005 at 8:41 pm #209853John MontgomeryKeymasterWe’ll be posting as soon as possible — all of us are back in our homes now. The week at NAB is simply crazy and really difficult to post because of time crunches…. but we all still apologize for the lack of news from the event.
We’ll also be going a bit more into depth regarding some of the new discreet stuff, including Toxik….

Speak more to me about “New way of working instead of containers.”
and the History function. It looks like they really boosted the timeline aspect of Smoke… really nice since it is an EDITOR.
Can’t wait for the full reports.

April 24, 2005 at 12:26 am #209886AnonymousInactiveThe Lustre 3D track was pretty cool…but did you try asking one of the Lustre artists at the Discreet booth to demo it? They couldn’t. It was a technology preview that won’t make it into a real version for quite a while. I bet they had a piece of footage that was ideally suited for the 3d track. Same with the shot where they relit from the trees. Extremely cool stuff, but i bet its unstable as all hell.
The mac version of Lustre was….amazing 😀 Full blown lustre on a powerbook sans the video i/o. I wonder how much that’ll cost…
Does anyone have a copy of the discreet showreel from this year? I kept meaning to ask one of the discreet girls if they had DVDs available but I didn’t get a chance.

April 24, 2005 at 2:05 am #209888AnonymousInactiveI was at the user group meeting…saw the reel…loved it. I didn’t submit any work this year…I just wanna watch the reel again. I liked their choice of music this year.
April 24, 2005 at 2:59 am #209857kalthansParticipantNAB was pretty cool. not for any specific thing i saw (lustre FAST 3d tracking was cool, but why was it demo’d in lustre and not inferno?…..clip history was demo’d last year…..smart moblur was exciting, etc etc)….
what really got me jazzed was the overall sense that I LOVE WHAT I DO and that i feel truly blessed to be working on a discreet box. FFI/FS artists are a breed apart and when you stood at the confluence of the discreet/apple/avid booths and looked at each respective vendor the discreet (oh, sorry…autodesk) booth just made me S M I L E. something about the toolsets and the integration and throughput simply puts them on top. true, Apple is making very positive and creative inroads but discreet is matching stride with opening up their API (viz: Wiretap) and reaching out to the workgroup market with Toxik. i hope that the autodesk acquistion and rebranding will ultimately mean increased R&D spending like they said at the show. discreet has huge street cred and they have their work cut out for them to stay ahead of the curve.
so…to sum up…thanks to all the people who went above and beyond to present, demonstrate, impress, talk, communicate, listen and respond. john, mike & jeff from fxG for their session, phillipe for his contribution, the autodesk brass for being so accomodating and especially to martin for his charming ways & honest insights into FFI.
it is a pleasure to be part of this community and a joy to be doing this work.
k
ps-> if anyone manages to get a copy of the showreel i’d like to get one too to show everyone at the shop who didn’t get to go to NAB.
