Well now that smoke is SW only you can do that (on mac), so it seems to be going in that direction.. so maybe a Linux/OSX SW only release would be the future ,..being on linux could give us more hardware options?

as an owner/artist, yeah the subscription thing is waaaaay better than it used to be. the thing that is still tough is keeping up with the Nvidia cards. Autodesk doesn’t let you upgrade JUST the grfx card. our 3D guys do it by themselves! machines that are routinely 2-3 years old can usually accept whatever the new card is.

under their newly announced HW upgrade program, it will cost us $28K to upgrade from the HPxw8400 to the z800. now multiply that by 3, and it’s still pretty rough. They really need to standardize that portion of the plan – we should be able to just swap out the grfx card if we want. clearly, in my case these machines are 2 old to fit the new FX5800sdi card, but if you own a HP9400 or HP8600, why can’t you!?!?!

as another owner/artist i’m curious to know your thoughts on it…

    hope you are well…

Tim — I think what you bring up is definitely a problem…and glad you mentioned it. I think the card issue is huge and we definitely should be able to easily and cost effectively swap them out on systems that need one.

I also think the markup is a bit much, as you can build it yourself quite a bit more cost effectively.

I know I would like to upgrade to an FX5600 in my HP9400. Since the HP can and has been sold with the 9400, what about the licensing/hardware checks would prevent me from doing it?

I dont see why you cant just call Autodesk and get a new license every time you change a bit of hardware,… (in the future)

This is probably a bit of an ignorant question, but how much difference does the new graphics card make vs a new CPU? Will an older AMD box run nearly as fast as a z800 if you can get the 5800 in there?

I remember doing tests back when the linux machines were coming into favor and blowing the doors off the old SGIs. A straight up Action with AA and displacement way up was rendering faster on an Onyx 2 even though it was nearly a decade older. As soon as you added CC’s, MK’s and stuff like that the Linux box won easily. Anybody got a list of what nodes are GPU accelerated?

Good question, and how much are you allowed to vary the spec of your box?
Maybe this question is more relevant to Flare, being a software only option, but maybe it’s time for a software only option for Flame?

I have no insider knowledge, but it’s free to dream :

Out Flint. Flame and inferno would be the same software only different hardware.

Drastic price change and 3 new simple product :

    1 – Flame on Mac :15 000 U$ ( a la Smoke on mac )
2 – Inferno Linux: 125 000 U$ ( TurnKey system with hardware and Burn farm nodes)
    3 – Flare ( cross Platform linux,mac ) 6000 U$

    Start the next compositing revolution.

flame on mac wud be nice as long as it doesn’t have a crap blackmagic card…hope the reduced prices [if any ] have been well thought out by autodesk, else there wont be money for R&D in the future.

I’d like to see a broader support for other graphics cards for running Flare on a laptop.

id like to see an option of toxik 2011 as a standalone package for 1500USD 🙂

you can upgrade the HPxw9400 from the FX5500 card to the FX5600 – that is one of the few avenues possible for HW upgrade. i think it’s 7K to do that. we are doing it with one of our machines. as far as flame on osX… yeah, i don’t think so. no inside knowledge here, but the whole industry is trending towards these GPU enabled cards and the amazing things they can do. i don’t think the mac ships with that kind of graphics card. (at least not the same one that comes in the new HP Z800 systems) plus, Autodesk doesnt exactly have a history of rushing their products to market on the cheapest, most available hardware. that being said, with the abject failure of properly marketing Toxic… they need to do something to shore up the low end (ie NUKE) segment of the market. makes you wonder if they don’t just buy the Foundry.

i guess we will all see soon enough..

just heard from one of our resellers that they dropped flare to 15K. about time. besides whatever might be new features in 2011 – i think that’s the biggest news. hopefully i’m wrong.

Tim’s in NYC, so I’d assume USD. We are definitely living in interesting times!
