yeah, it’s USD. sorry ’bout that.
keep in mind also, the ‘hidden’ costs. you still need to build a half-way decent PC and stock it with the same amount of RAM your flame has. that’s gotta be in the 8-10k range. (that’s still better than buying it from Autodesk) and then you’ll prob want sparks – i don’t know what sapphire wants for Flare licenses… i’m guessing you should budget a few grand for that. you’ll also have the cost of subscription, while not 10K a machine like flame, again, prob 2-3K / year.
that beings said, 90% of the power of flame (no video i/o; no desktop) in flare for 15K isn’t bad. i just wish we didn’t have to build a PC for it and that it could run on mac like SMACK.
i can dream, can’t i?

March 27, 2010 at 9:27 am #218772pixelmonkParticipantThe one I would really like to see, is some form of bgd archiving, particularly with framestores getting larger and the prospect of cheaper Flares, (which of course have to be archived through a Flame), and there being no Backdraft anymore, I think this is a really important feature that needs to be addressed.

March 27, 2010 at 9:35 am #218786Saran SirikasamsapParticipantwhat we need is backdraft off a linux laptop linked to fibre SANs maybe ?
March 27, 2010 at 2:42 pm #218771pixelmonkParticipantOr preferably some free option.

March 31, 2010 at 5:29 pm #218807Christi SelleParticipantComming next, Lustre on OSX why not
April 3, 2010 at 3:47 pm #218808Christi SelleParticipantStill doubts ???
Here are the last news :
Autodesk abandons Linux, ports entire lineup to OSX.MONTREAL, CA. Due to the overwhelming success of its Smoke on Mac product offering, Autodesk Media & Entertainment is announcing the immediate availability of its entire lineup on the Macintosh platform. This includes Flame, Flare, and Lustre in addition to the previously announced Smoke.
“We had always believed that the software was the key, not the platform” said Philippe Soeiro, Lead Developer, “However, we vastly underestimated just how much draw Apple has in the market.”
Autodesk will still sell the systems turnkey through its various reseller channels, and any price changes have not been revealed, but the promise of more details at the upcoming NAB trade show was made very clear.
“A lot of people are going to love what we’re going to show them at NAB. Not just all the new tools and features in the software itself, but the fact that they can run the software on their platform of choice.” said Marc Hamaker, Product Manager.
When asked about the plans to continue developing for Linux, Soeiro commented: “Well, you know, it’s hard. We’ve been on Linux for a while now, and IRIX before that. We kept trying to make it easier and more user-friendly, with tools like dlcfg, cmtool, and rmsoft, but it’s just not as intuitive as the Mac. Plus, porting everything over to Mac allows us some really great opportunities to grow into the mobile sector as well.”
