    Hi, Its me again !!
I posted a question about how Can i get professional quality colors using
Edius 3.5 and Fusion 5 for complex compositing and keying knowing i use only DV tpaes throug IEEE(idont have any other kind of recorders/players) But now it got even harder and more complex !!
Two directors i know asked me to do some realy serious and complex Visual Fx (including complex compositing for both live and 3d CG, Keying ,object removal, color correction,….) plus editing !!!!!!
Both of them use 35 mm camera one is shooting a music video clip and the other is MAKING A MOVIE !! so i dont need to speak about the quality both of them want. now i have more then one question :
first what are the standard steps in all big professional post-production houses to make the mterial each of them has ready for the work (digitiz) ?
waaht kind of storage media will be used ?
how can i get this material ? is going to be stored on hard drive or RAID ?
and the quality can do the job using my systm (i have 5 dual and single processor p4 workstations and fusion5 ,edius 3.5 ,monet 1.5,mokey 3,3ds max 8)and have the professional quality they want ?
is the DV recorder i have going to be used at any stage ?
I know too many questions i’m sorry !!but i need DETAILED answers ASAP
and i dont know where else to ask !
please help me its a good chance for me and i need any help
    many thanks 😀

I think you are in way over you head. Doing post for film isn’t a one man show and you don’t have the gear to pull it off. I’m sorry.
Maybe you can do a few effect shots here and there but taking care of the whole process like conforming, grading etc, you’ll need more horsepower and calibrated monitoring.
First you will need telecine to scan the material for you. Get a onelight and edit the film. This you might be able to do (editing I mean)… getting the material on dv-tape and use your setup. But if you’re not an experienced editor I wouldn’t recommend that either.
But conforming and grading, forget it. You’ll need a machine with at least HD playback and loads of raided storage.
Trying to use your setup (you would have to a add a calibrated monitor and extra storage) working on the whole film with log dpx files is going to be a total nightmare. And grade in fusion… don’t think so. To do this we’re talking machines that cost lots of lots of dollars.
So my suggestion is that you find a posthouse to work with. They can take care of the “heavy” stuff like telecine, grading and conforming. Then maybe you can concentrate on the effects part like 3d and retouching. But it’s still going to be a hell of a lot of job to do. Think twice before you take this on. Good luck.

    First thnk you Keyser_Soze 😀 !
ok ,lets say that we will make the telecine in other post , and i am going to
buy Discreet lustre for any additional grading and color correction.
how can i get the material for the other post where we will make the telecine
(in witch format and what kind of storage media )?
and i am going to add 2 more workstations and as many RAID starge space as the project need !
    can be done now ?
i am waiting for the answers
    thanks

Seting up a pipeline for feature film isn’t an uncomplicated task and probably not something that can be solved here in this forum. And if you have the money to spend on something like a lustre or whatever I think the best thing you could do is to bring somebody in with the right knowledge and technical skills to help you sort things out.
As I said before, to do what you want you will need at least, HD playback, conforming, digital grading, calibrated monitoring, large raid, FAST network, renderfarm for 3d and fusion and probably some kind of tape deck like the HDCAM SR. And of course you’ll need people… editor, colorist, compositors and 3d guys.
In short you’ll need a small post facility and that isn’t somehting you set up in a day. I’m not an expert on all these things – and I probably missed something – but before you “add to cart” I would definetely recommend you to contact an expert to help you spend your money wisely. Cheers.

You do realize how much Lustre costs, right? I’m still waiting for my wife to let me sell our house so I can get one. 😉 Start thinking in the $200,000 US ballpark.

Anyway, if you’re going to be doing work on 35mm, you’ll probably want everything at at least 2k, 4:4:4 resolution. Everything you have now can handle this, it won’t be realtime but you’re not going to get realtime effects at those resolutions without spending a lot of money (maybe half a mil or so?) and even then the compositing still won’t be realtime.

Do some research on color space, resolution, and digital media formats – there’s plenty of websites out there to help. Also, quit asking the same question over and over again in all the forums!
