Which platfom better for running Combustion??
I have a G5 that I will be using for Combustion but I’ve also been looking at the HP workstations. Is there a difference in running Combustion on XP or OS X. I know there are better OpenGL cards for the PC but the G5 is just darn fast! Any thoughts? For the most part I don’t care which OS I run I just want to have the best workstation for Combustion.
Thanks,

functionally and from ui there’s no difference between apple and pc.
i’m inclined to think that i read a bit more complaints about overall stability from the apple side. but i also hear people saying combustion is as stable on ox as it it on windows. speedwise, there should be no between a g5 and a high-end pc. the extra features a g5 and ox might have will be not exploid by combustion.
take this with a bit of caution, because, i have only experience with pc and the ox side is a bit of hear-say.-rayk

I will be upgrading the grapics card soon to something like a Radeon 9800 Pro. I’ve also been looking at the new Medea G-RAID for storage. I was planning on making those upgrades to my G5 but if there is a specific advantage to using the PC I’d go that route.
Thanks for your reply πJanuary 31, 2005 at 6:43 am #209297AnonymousInactiverobbyracer wrote:Which platfom better for running Combustion??

πHi,
I use combustion on a dual 2GHz G5 and I can say from experience that you should definitely go with a PC if you want the best combustion experience. I don’t think it’s Apple’s fault, I think discreet hasn’t taken the time to fully optimize combustion for the G5/OS X. You don’t see the same kind of performance disparity between platforms with Afer Effects, so something must be up with combustion’s code. If you combine that performance disparity with the greater availability of plugins for the Windows version, it’s a pretty cut-and-dried case for the PC.
In my experience, caching clips to RAM is much faster on the PC side, and backburner only works on Windows. As to whether you should go with a dual Xeon or dual Opteron PC, I’ll leave that to others, as I have no direct experience with dual Opteron systems.

A PC is the right choice! on a mac it is more buggy and not so stable. you do not have backburner to put your workspaces on a renderfarm, but you pay the same money for a lic! in my oppinion discreet should get the mac version fixed or they should dump it. but a the moment it is a bad compromize.

I agree with you completely.

My G5 is great for the Apple Pro Apps but for the price of upgrading it to run Combustion really well I could buy a uber-fast PC. Maybe by the time I get the full version on Combustion Discreet will get the bugs worked out of the Mac version
