Does anyone know where you can purchase the silver and grey balls that are used on set to capture the light sources for compositing 3D elements in post? Any help would be appreciated.

I don’t know if they can be purchased. We had a couple custom made by a guy in London. I think the price was pretty hefty.

any lawn and garden store should carry the mirror balls (aka gazing globes). For your grey ball, simply buy two gazing globes and paint one. Try to pick balls with the least amount of imperfections. good luck! -chad

Why do you need to use to different colors insted of just using grey or silver? I’m kinda new to 3d tracking so I’m curious.

These are not for tracking, these are balls to generate reflection maps and to photograph HDRs. The grey ball i so you can visually see the shadows, – plus you can add a similar 3D grey ball over the top and see how closely the lighting matches.
